First Steps Outside

Chen Lin pulled the Shadow Cloak tighter around his shoulders and stepped further away from the Inn's door. The beginner rift's air felt heavy with residual energy, but the cloak helped him blend into the shadows of broken buildings and glowing rifts. For the first time since his betrayal, he was moving through the world again, not as prey, but as an observer. He didn't go far. The Inn was his lifeline; leaving it completely unprotected still felt too risky. Instead, he circled toward a small adventurer camp he had spotted earlier, staying on the outskirts and listening. Voices drifted on the wind. "…Wang Family is offering good rewards for anyone who brings back rift cores. They're gearing up big for the Convergence." "Su Mei's engagement party is the talk of the city. Lucky girl, snatching Young Master Wang like that." Chen Lin's jaw tightened. So they were already parading their "victory." The memory of being dragged away like garbage flashed through his mind, but he pushed it down. Anger without power was useless. He was about to turn back when he noticed a lone injured cultivator limping away from the camp, clutching a glowing rift core. Three rough-looking men were following him. "Hand it over, cripple. You don't need it anymore." Chen Lin hesitated only a second. He moved quietly, using the cloak to stay hidden. When the attackers closed in on the injured man, Chen Lin stepped forward just enough for them to see a hooded figure. "This is neutral ground," he said calmly, echoing the words he used inside the Inn. "Leave him be." The three men laughed. "Who the hell are you?" Before they could attack, the air shimmered behind Chen Lin. The wooden door of the Wandering Sovereign Inn materialized in the rift, warm light spilling out invitingly. The injured cultivator's eyes widened in shock and hope. He stumbled toward the door. The attackers hesitated, sensing something unnatural about the sudden appearance of a building. "Whatever. Not worth the trouble," one of them muttered, backing off. Chen Lin helped the man inside. Once the door closed, the Inn sealed itself off from the outside once more. Inside, the man collapsed into a chair, breathing heavily. "Thank you… I thought I was dead. That core nearly cost me my life." Chen Lin treated his wounds with the enhanced healing water and served him a proper meal. As the man recovered, he introduced himself as Zhang Wei, a solo awakener who had been lucky enough to obtain a decent rift core but unlucky with greedy scavengers. In gratitude, Zhang Wei offered the rift core itself as partial payment. The moment the core touched the counter, the Inn reacted strongly. Essence flooded the structure. The World Tree sapling outside visibly grew a few inches taller, its leaves glowing softly. A new notification rose gently in Chen Lin's mind, the Inn had reached Level 2. New features unlocked: a small bathhouse room and the ability to slightly enlarge the exterior safe zone around the door. Zhang Wei stayed the night and shared more rumors about the city. The Wang Family was becoming increasingly dominant, suppressing smaller groups. Su Mei had been showing off her new status everywhere. When Zhang Wei left the next morning, he promised to return and bring friends he trusted. The satisfaction reward gave Chen Lin two more Golden Tickets. He used them right away. The gachapon machine spun with increased brilliance. First reward: Basic Defensive Array Blueprint – Can create a protective barrier around the Inn that repels low-level threats. Second reward: Attendant Contract Scroll (One Use), Allows the Host to offer a formal contract to a willing guest, granting them benefits and a minor role within the Inn. Chen Lin smiled faintly as he applied the defensive array. A thin, nearly invisible barrier of golden light now surrounded the immediate area outside the door. It wasn't strong yet, but it was a start. He looked at the Attendant Contract Scroll thoughtfully. Powerful guests like Yun Xue might be interested in the future, but he would be careful. Trust had to be earned. For now, the Inn was no longer just a hiding place. It was becoming a force, small, hidden, but steadily growing in the shadows. And Chen Lin, the former delivery rider everyone had discarded, was becoming something they would never expect. The Sovereign Host was waking up.
