THE DAY
Today's the day. The town was bubbly, everyone was in a good mood and in high spirits. I wore the new dress my mom got me the day before. It was a blue off-shoulder dress that flared at the bottom. It matched my blue eyes perfectly.
With one last twirl of satisfaction, I walked downstairs and met the stares of my family. My mother grinned, satisfied by her choices of dresses. I rolled my eyes and sat down in the dining room.
“Can you guys just stop staring, it's getting creepy” I mumbled.
" I make the best decisions when it comes to wears. Look how pretty you are, and it matches the color of your eyes so perfectly”, my mom said.
"Hello everyone, hey Aries” Isla called as she entered with June behind her.
June was dressed in a black suit and Isla in a black knee-length gown.
“Hey guys, you look hot”, I teased.
“You're not so bad yourself, Aries” June replied.
“Hey kids, it's almost time for the big event", my mom said excitedly.
"Hey Mrs Brown”, Isla and June chorused.
After a few exchanged pleasantries, the three of us headed out.
It was pitch dark outside, but the night was just getting started for us. People were outside, and the crowd seemed to be headed in one direction, the city hall.
“I can't believe that in a few hours we'll be turning adults," I said out of the blue.
“Aries, are you kidding me? We've been waiting for this day our whole life. Why do you want to back out now?" June asked.
" She still wants to be a kid", Isla sneered.
"I never said that, you weirdo. I'm really excited, I just can't settle with this whole mating thing. I guess I’m just not ready" I shrugged.
" Aries, you'll be fine. Remember that if you find your mate, but you're not ready to settle down yet, you can choose to wait till you're ready. So there's nothing to be afraid of, besides we're here for you”, June assured.
" Thanks June” I said, and took a deep breath.
" Imagine getting mated to Kurt. That's a straight-out rejection from me," Isla said, and we all laughed.
Kurt was the town's weirdo and, in all honesty, I wouldn't want to be mates with him either.
“That would be the worst thing to ever happen to any girl," June added, and we laughed.
The city wall was getting filled up as both old and young. Every family was there to support their own teenagers when the clock hit twelve. The hall was filled with adults and kids my age, who were about to shift. Young children weren't allowed as they could get frightened if they experience others shift when it's not yet their turn.
The alpha’s family seat was close to the podium. It was separated from the others. There's a chair for the alpha, Luna, and his two kids. There were also special seats for the elderly and important people.
Just then the MC climbed up the podium, he addressed the event of the night and invited Alpha Dominic up on stage.
The room went dead silent as he climbed the podium…..
“Hello everyone, it's yet another night to welcome the new adults into the reality of life and the pack. And also to witness their first shift into their wolf forms. Kids, I only have a few words of advice to give. You're the new adult in the pack, that means a lot of change. Change how you move, think and basically everything. I'd like you to enjoy your last few hours before midnight” he said, and climbed down.
The music blared, and we all danced and had small talks till a few minutes to 12.
The alpha climbed the podium again and everyone returned to their seats.
“Kids, parents and guardians. The time we've all been looking forward to is finally here. I hope the adults didn't forget to bring blankets or other materials needed to cover their children's nakedness when they turn. From any moment now……….”
The alpha was interrupted by the sound of a bone cracking….it had begun.
