THE HOUSEKEEPER'S SECRET

Chapter 8: The Housekeeper’s Secret Claudia moved silently through the estate, observing Sara with careful precision. Her eyes flicked to every movement, every slight gesture, noting where Sara lingered and what she examined. Derek had instructed her well: uncover anything Sara might be hiding, but remain unnoticed. That evening, I noticed Claudia lingering near the library, her eyes sharp, calculating. “Dinner is ready,” she said softly when she saw us, but I sensed more behind her polite smile. Later, I caught her moving toward my private study. I followed silently, curiosity piqued. She slipped inside, rifling through drawers with subtle, precise movements. My mind raced. What exactly was she searching for? And was she reporting back to Derek, as I feared? Sara was too engrossed in her own search to notice the housekeeper’s presence—or perhaps she suspected, but chose to ignore it. Either way, both women were secrets in motion, and the estate was a chessboard where each move could change everything. Sara had a way of making the air between us electric, even when nothing was spoken. Every accidental brush of her hand, every shared glance over the grand table, ignited a spark I couldn’t ignore. One evening, while she examined a set of ornate cabinets, I watched silently, pretending to fumble with my cane. Her movements were subtle, graceful, yet deliberate—every step intentional. “Looking for something?” I asked casually, but the corner of my mouth betrayed a small smirk. She jumped slightly, startled, then forced a polite smile. “Just… appreciating your collection.” I leaned slightly, lowering my voice. “Or hiding something.” Her gaze flickered, a mix of surprise and nervousness. “I… I’m not hiding anything… really.” But I knew better. I had watched her, followed her, noticed the small details she thought I would miss. Her secrets were layered, and I intended to uncover every one.
