Chapter 9: Lena’s Warning

993 Words
Luna Callahan POV The morning after Lena’s sudden visit, the weight of her warning pressed against me like a stone lodged deep in my chest. Moonshade Hollow had always been shrouded in mist and mystery, but now the fog seemed thicker, the shadows longer, as if the town itself was holding its breath. Every glance out my window, every rustle of leaves beyond the trees, felt charged with unseen eyes watching. Lena’s words echoed in my mind. They’ll come for you soon. Be ready. I wasn’t sure who they were exactly, only that they meant to hunt me — or worse. The reality of being marked by the lunar crown, tied to an ancient and feared bloodline, was starting to set in with a cold certainty. Determined not to be a victim, I spent the day packing my small cottage with the essentials — herbs, my mother’s journals, the few trinkets that felt like pieces of her still lingering here. But when I reached for the old chest where I had hidden some of the most precious and secret things, my fingers brushed cold emptiness. The chest had been rifled through. Heart hammering, I scanned the room in disbelief. Drawers were pulled open, their contents scattered across the floor in chaotic disarray. My mother’s precious books—gone. Her handwritten notes and carefully pressed herbs were missing. The chest, meant to be my secret sanctuary, was no longer mine. I dropped to my knees and searched the wreckage for any clue — a scrap of paper, a note, anything. Instead, I found a dark, burned symbol scorched into the wooden floor beneath where the chest had stood. Three claw marks, intersected by a crescent moon. The symbol was chillingly familiar — the mark of the Council’s Shadow Guard, an elite group of enforcers who dealt in fear and silence. They’ve been here. They’re watching. A cold shiver slid down my spine. It wasn’t just a warning. It was a declaration: I was no longer safe in my own home. I stood, breath shallow, and surveyed the damage. Everything my mother had left me — knowledge, protection, history — was gone. Suddenly, the room felt suffocating. I needed answers. I needed allies. And most of all, I needed to understand why I was so dangerous that the Council wanted to erase me completely. My thoughts were interrupted by the soft creak of the front door. Heart pounding, I spun around to see a figure stepping into the dim light of the room. Lena. Her expression was grim, her eyes sharp as a wolf’s. “You shouldn’t be here,” I said, half question, half plea. “I had to come,” she replied, her voice low but steady. “I couldn’t let you face this alone.” She moved forward, pulling a small, wrapped bundle from beneath her coat and handing it to me. “This belonged to your mother.” I unwrapped the cloth carefully to reveal an ancient-looking book, its leather cover cracked with age. A symbol was burned into the front — the lunar crown. I traced the emblem with trembling fingers. “Where did you find this?” Lena’s eyes flickered with something unreadable. “Hidden in a safe house, left for you by those who still resist the Council. It contains secrets — your bloodline, the prophecy, and how to awaken the full power within you.” My mind reeled. This was more than I could have hoped for. But the danger looming over me felt more real than ever. “Lena… why are you helping me? You’re part of the pack. Aren’t you supposed to protect Asher?” She hesitated, then nodded. “I do. But I also protect you. Because what’s coming won’t just destroy you — it will destroy all of us if the Council succeeds.” A heavy silence filled the room. I wanted to ask so many questions, but none felt safe. Then Lena’s expression hardened. “They’ll come for you soon, Luna. You need to be ready. Trust no one, not even the ones closest to you.” My heart clenched. How could I protect myself when I didn’t even know who to trust? Before I could respond, the distant howl of wolves pierced the quiet night, and Lena’s eyes sharpened. “I have to go,” she said. “But I’ll be watching. And when the time comes, you’ll know where to find me.” She slipped out into the darkness before I could say goodbye. I was alone again. But not for long. The days that followed blurred into a whirlwind of whispered research, restless nights, and furtive glances over my shoulder. I buried myself in the book Lena had brought, uncovering secrets about the Lunar Queen — my ancestor — and the terrible prophecy that named me as the key to a new era. The more I learned, the heavier the burden grew. But then the inevitable happened. One night, I returned to my cottage to find signs of intrusion—broken branches near the window, faint footprints in the mud. My blood ran cold. Inside, another message awaited me. A single silver medallion lay on the floor, etched with the crescent claw symbol of the Shadow Guard. Someone had been here again. Watching. Waiting. The Council was closing in. And I had no choice but to run. With a small bag packed and the book clutched tightly in my hands, I slipped out of my cottage just as the sun began to rise, casting pale light over Moonshade Hollow. I didn’t know where I was going. Only that I couldn’t stay. The Hollow’s secrets whispered to me in the wind — a promise of answers, danger, and perhaps salvation. And somewhere in the shadows, I knew Lena was watching, waiting. Because this was only the beginning. The Council would come for me. And I would have to be ready.
