Trying to Understand

Skylar scooped up her sleeping babies and cuddled them close to herself. Whispering to them, she said, "I'm not going to let anyone separate the two of you. I will always keep you safe. If being queen means that something bad happens to you two, it really isn't worth it at all."
Donnie started to stir and whine. Skylar laid Mel back in the crib and prepared to feed Donnie. Instead of Mel settling back down as planned, she started screaming. Skylar decided she would nurse both of her babies at the same time. While she fed them, she sang a song that Jackson had sung to her when she was little. The song talked about blue seas and wide-open spaces where no one lived, and elementals ran freely without caution.
James knocked softly on the nursery door, "Can I come in?"
Skylar looked up at him but didn't stop singing.
"I know you are scared, and so am I," James softly said.
"I don't want to be queen if it means putting them in any danger. It isn't worth it," Skylar responded.
James walked over and sat on the floor in front of the rocker that Skylar was in, "Honey, it isn't that easy. This isn't something that we chose for ourselves. It was written a very long time ago. We are supposed to bring order back to all the magical creatures in the world. We are going to stop century-long wars and bring peace back. At least that is the hope for everyone."
Skylar sighed, "Why us? What makes us so special?"
"We are the first two descendants of all four elementals. Well, you being two and me being the other two. I hope that makes sense. I know you want to give up, but a lot of people are counting on us. We are going to reunited people all over the world. Bring people hope, peace, and most importantly, love," James explains.
"You make it sound like it is going to be so simple. Are we going to have to fight more fires? Are we going to have to stop wars? What are the dangers ahead? What about the strange silence that has now followed us? Will it keep following us?" Skylar asked question after question.
James shrugged his shoulders, "I don't know. All I know is we will face everything together."
"Which twin will we lose and for how long? Who will tear our family apart? What will make it all right?" Skylar cried softly. "I have a lot more questions than answers. Sadie and Dylan have Eliza and Zach to comfort them, but they aren't losing their son. We don't have anyone, but we are losing one of the twins. I don't know what I am going to do when they are ripped from us. I don't feel whole without both of them. I don't know if I can do this."
There was a flash of light that caused alarm to both Skylar and James. "Do not be frightened. I am not here to take away your child. I am here to help guide you through this," A soothing female voice stated.
"Who are you?" James asked while Skylar held the twins closer.
"I am the goddess of the stars; my name is Via. The twins will always be safe. I can tell you which twin will be taken and why. However, that will not help you through this journey. That will only cause more confusion. I can even tell you who will take the twin. That will only cause frustration and misunderstanding. I am here to comfort you. I have been with you both since the day you were married," Via stated in a silky voice.
"Why?" was all that Skylar could ask.
Via smiled, "Dear child, you two are the most precious elementals and magical creatures ever born. The twins are the only two that have all four elements. This will cause anger among some of the kingdoms and tribes. They will seek to destroy both children."
"Is that why we must lose one to keep them both safe?" Skylar asked.
Via only smiled and disappeared.
James shook his head, "That leaves us with so many more questions. Are the twins as dangerous as others will see them?"
Skylar looked up at her husband in shock, "How can you say that? They are two months old and haven't even come into their powers. I didn't get my powers until we found each other. I mean, Merlia kept me from ever finding out about my wolves to start with. That's not the point; the point is you didn't get your powers until we found out we were mates. How can the twins be any danger to anyone until at least then?"
"That's not what I meant. I know they aren't any danger to anyone. When they come into their powers, will they cause harm to others even if we raise them right?" James shook his head. "I don't want to think about our sweet bundles of love being anything but innocent."
Skylar shook her head, "They are innocent, and we will raise them right. We will make sure that they follow in our footsteps in fight evil and protect the good. We will train them and pray to the Moon Goddess and the Star Goddess. All the Gods and Goddesses that they will be good, not evil."
James smiled, "There is more on the book's binding that Dylan wasn't finished telling us about. Are you interested? We can take the twins with us, so you can make sure they are safe."
"Yes, will you take them both while I head to the bathroom to freshen up? I will be right behind you," Skylar said as she kissed each twin on top of their heads, and then she kissed James.
James took the twins in his arms and headed back down to the conference room where Sadie, Dylan, Eliza, and Zach waited.
Skylar walked into the bathroom and looked at her puffy eyes, "What are we going to do?"
Sky growled, "We will protect them at all cost."
Zara laughed, "Via made it clear that we can't stop them from being separated. We must complete the book as fast as possible to make sure that we can keep them together."
"Where do we find the rest of the books? It is like looking for a needle in a haystack," Skylar laughed dryly. "I want more answers. I must look presentable before I head back downstairs."
"You look beautiful as always," Zara said.
Sky laughed, "She looks like a drowned rat. Zara, why aren't you honest."
Skylar shook her head at her wolves, "I love you both." Skylar washed her face and headed down to the conference room to join her family and the old council.
