Esme.
" Back then, she treated me like a fool. She rejected my every attempt. Every girl loves flowers, normal flowers, but she had to be so picky, only interested in the ugly and rare Gloriosa lilies."
" I had to drive for five hours, just to get the damn flowers for her! And the saddest part? I had to act like I enjoyed every bit of it. "
" Even as I handed them to her, I had to wear a smile, acting all sweet, and sickly in love."
" What a b*tch!" He cursed, once again, kicking another bench, and a barrage of noise followed shortly after. But that background noise? Compared to the noise within, the drumming of my heart, the ringing in my ears, was all insignificant.
I felt like my world was spinning, swirling, like I was losing balance. I felt like a fool, but that was an understatement.
All the love that he had showered me with. Every kind gesture, every little compliment. It had felt so real, so heartfelt. I had been touched. I had felt loved, seen. And yet, his honest confession had revealed otherwise.
He hadn't been in love. He had not been captivated by my beauty like he had proffessed. He loathed me. Every second he had spent with me, which to me, was blissful, had been like a shackle around his neck.
" But tonight, after I mark and mate with her, I will show her exactly what hell feels like. I will give her a glimpse of unfiltered horror. " His cold voice pulled me from my bitter haze.
" The mere thought of touching her, f*cking her, disgusts me to the very core. My skin crawls at the thought of marking her. "
" She repulses me. I loathe her very existence. " He went on, confessing. And I sat there, having my back to him, stiffly, fighting to maintain my composure, but I was barely hanging on. The sobs that I was desperately trying to swallow back were nearly choking me.
" I mean, what is there to like about Esme?" He asked, his voice filled with the kind of surprise that shattered every bit of self-esteem that I had in my very being. So, in his eyes, there was nothing to love about me?
" I mean, she is beautiful," He paused, as if looking for the right words, to make his insults stand.
" Beautiful is an understatement when describing Esme, honestly. She is breathtakingly gorgeous, but that's just that."
"Apart from her pretty face, she has nothing else to her name. She is just pretty, like flowers. Attractive and useless ."
" She is rigid, stiff, and lifeless. "
" She is like a dead log." He dragged, a mocking laughter rolling with his tongue.
To his 'generous' description of me, my body flushed hot, my temperature shot high, followed by beads of sweat that trickled down my back, as I sat there, shocked, as I listened to his true thoughts about me.
Twenty years of knowing each other. Four years of courtship, and two years of active dating, holding hands, sharing kisses and that was the description that he had of me. I was hurt, broken, to put it plainly.
For obvious reasons, my heavy disguise felt heavier, hotter, and ridiculous. I wanted to so much yank the mask out, tear the black robe apart, and expose myself to him, but I stilled.
" She has no life. She is boring. Always buried in the pack garden, quietly tending to herbs. Who wants a mate like that? If it were not for her title as the beta female, did she think that I would be interested in a person like her?"
" Especially when there is Gina? " He asked, his tone softening considerably as he mentioned the name, Gina.
Gina.
I tested the name on my lips, and a bitter laughter almost escaped from my lips.
Gina West.
Of course, it had to be her.
" Gina is everything that Esme isn't. She is beautiful and bold."
" She is dirty and nasty too, not sluty, just polished enough to make you lose your senses. "
" She is perfect for me, the she-wolf worth of standing next to me." He added, his voice edged with familiar tenderness as he spoke about her, the same tenderness that I used to think was exclusively for me.
How stupid!
" I can't wait to finally be with Gina, opened." He added, the excitement in his voice saying everything he wasn't saying. He was madly in love with her. And me?
" As for Esme? I will reject her after marking her. After I become the beta, I will pay someone to crawl to her bed. "
" Then, I will allow the whole pack to witness it, her infidelity, her betrayal of our vows."
" From there, do I really need to do much? I will play the victim, and Esme? Well, the whole pack's anger will be directed at her."
" She will end up in the pack cells, for years. In there, she will face a fate worse than death. I will have people torturing her." His words were wrapped with cruelty, his tone cold, amusement dancing with his tongue.
At that moment, I was too shaken to react. If I were rigid before, then at that point, my heartbeat was dead.
" I know there is no judgment here, because just like me, you are equally sinful, and that's why you became a host to such a place, but I will still explain. I am in a very good mood, after all."
"You see, I don't feel sorry for Esme. She deserves it. "
" She deserves everything she has been through and the more to come. If she must blame someone, she can blame her useless parents " He snapped, and my ears perked.
" Those proud old bones. They could have just accepted me as their perfect son-in-law and saved their lives, but...but they had to reject me, over and over."
" What right did they have? Thinking that their daughter was better than me? Thinking that she deserved someone better than me?"
" Well, they brought it up upon themselves. "
" I was ready to do anything to reach my goals, and that meant eliminating all stumbling obstacles. "
" They were the obstacles. "
" I tampered with their car brakes, sending them to their sweet death."
" As for their daughter? She can join them in the afterlife after she is done entertaining the hundred and ten rogues that I will be sending to her cell, daily."
" That's her fate."
" That's what she deserves. "
After his confession, he didn't linger around. His footsteps faded away, leaving behind his familiar scent, which felt like a shackle around my neck.
He had confessed.
In his plans, my fate was already sealed.
But Cooper, did you know that you had unknowingly confessed to me?
