The Chase

That next morning when Scott and Amanda, got out of bed, he told her about the text that he received the night prior. He asked her if she recognized the number which it was sent from. She pulled it up on her phone and it came up as, Colonel Wyatt’s burner phone. Scott said that they needed to get hold of Detective Smith that morning. He then told Amanda that she needed to tell the Detective everything. She agreed that she would tell him all she knew. Amanda did not know that her phone was being tracked. It had a bug in it, and as soon as she used it, the mysterious men would know where she was. That is how they knew she was with Scott that night. Scott called Detective Smith and told him that he had Amanda with him, and that she wanted to talk to him. But she needed to be protected, and her location needed to be kept a secret. He agreed to those terms, and asked if they could come into the police station, and just talk to him. He told Scott that he would not put her name down on the roster, just to keep her identity secret.             The two of them got cleaned up for the day, and had breakfast. They talked about what she knew. She said again that she knows almost everything. He asked about the Colonel, she said, “he has not been turned; they convinced him with positions of power, since that is what he is attracted to. He is naturally a very mean person, and that he had some loyal men that work just for him, that are “Hybrids.” They were meant to look like us. She said there are four types, the “Naturals.” They are the Aliens that fly the crafts around observing and taking notes on our vulnerabilities, and do experiments on humans. Then there are the “Created.” They are bread to look like humans, interact with them, and do the everyday jobs, without caring about the consequences of human interaction. They have no human soul. Most of them have little to no emotions or empathy for human life, and no one knows who they are, even themselves. Their only objective would be fulfilling the needs of the Alien race, once activated. Then you have the “Hybrids.” They are the turned, half human and half Alien. They are around to lead the human race into subservience. They are loyal to only the Alien hive mind. Then there are the ones like herself, following for the money or power.             She has never seen a “Natural.” They keep their identities hidden, and that is why they created the four levels. Scott could not believe what he was hearing. He could not understand how this could happen right under our noses. He then asked her why she was willing to risk it all, instead of just going into hiding and going someplace that they are not around. She said they are all over the world, hidden in plain sight. Amanda went of saying that “Hybrids” are in all the levels of the government, local and federal, all the way to the top. Then she told Scott, “that is why they could not just trust anyone, and they needed to be very careful.”  They are also aware of each other. They are all connected to a hive mind, with one on top, and right now it is a “Natural” that is at the top controlling them if needed. Joe knew that Amanda was still at Scott’s house; because she used her phone, to search the number that Scott got the text from. Joe was already making a plan to cause an accident, to get rid of both of them. Neither Scott nor Amanda knew the level of danger they were in. They had all the “Hybrids” searching for them, to take to Joe; because it is his mandate and mission to kill them both. The one thing that Scott knew was that he needed to keep Amanda safe. He felt like it was his responsibility.             As soon as they left Scott’s house, they were in open waters, full of sharks. Before getting into the car, Scott searched all around it, and then inside it, before they got in. He felt that it was safe, so he started the engine, which started right up. He breathed a sigh of relief. As he pulled out of the driveway, he was watching behind him and all around, for cars that maybe following them. He told Amanda that he has never been so scared to go someplace in his life. But he thought that it would be safe at a police station. Amanda informed him, that there are lots of “Hybrids” in law enforcement. Scott called the Detective and voiced his concerns that other police officers might be on the wrong side of the law. So they could not go in the general public way. She needed to be disguised, as much as possible. Detective Smith was starting to get the picture that there are people in high levels involved here. He told Scott to meet at a new location which is a safe house that has been used for surveillance in the past; and that they are to meet there.             The Detective knew that phones can be tracked, so he said after this call, that they should turn their phones off. Their phones were off and they were heading to the safe house. But before Amanda turned off her phone, Joe had already gotten a general location of where they were heading. They would be at the safe house, in just a few minutes, from the time they turned their phones off. The safe house was a motel in downtown Salt Lake City, in a scuzzy part of town. Scott pulled into the parking lot and looked at the rundown motel, with paint peeling off the walls, windows with bars on them, and a pool half drained full of mold. There were a couple of working girls walking around the parking lot and a d*******l going down in front of unit 3. Amanda said, well this is very inconspicuous, as they look at each other. They sat in the car not wanting to get out, because of what was going on around them. They were afraid that they might get shot or something.             The Detective was not far behind them. He pulled up in an unmarked car, which even had a regular plate on it. This was not a normal police car, it was meant for undercover drug deals. As soon as he pulled up, he looked at them and went right to unit 5, and unlocked the door and went in; but, he did not shut the door all the way. Amanda and Scott got out of the car and slowly walked over to unit 5, and just walked in. It had an unmade bed, pizza boxes in the corner, and a couple of chairs around the window, with a telescope and microphone for recording conversations. It was diffidently used for one thing, since it was very un-kept, smelled like old food, and was in plain sight. Detective Smith said, “come in and close and lock the door behind you.” He told them to have a seat. Then he said, “what is going on, murder, missing pilot, and fugitive being helped by government personnel?” He looked at Amanda and said, “what do you know, and who is behind it all.” Amanda said, “I will start at the beginning.”             While Amanda was telling the Detective about what was going on, Joe was getting closer to finding out where they were. He had been in contact with another officer working in the vehicle dispatch office that was a ‘Hybrid” himself. He informed Joe that Detective Smith had checked out an undercover vehicle, and was heading downtown. He said that he was meeting a couple of people, but did not log their names. He deduced that there were only a few places that he would go to meet in private. Joe was told that, there are three main safe houses, used for surveillances and interviews. He gave Joe all the addresses, since the car checked out was not GPS tracked. Joe logged all three places in his GPS, and headed to the closest one first. He knew what kind of cars to be looking for. As soon as he got to the first place, there were no cars parked there, but he checked it out anyway. The place was empty. He noticed that the other two places were motels, and he did not want to miss them by going to the wrong one.             Joe had the names of the motels and called them, and asked the manager on the phone if these cars were in their parking lot. The first place he called said that their parking lot was full and had lots of cars in it, because of a science fiction comic convention right down the street. So since Joe felt that they would not be at that one, because it was full, he took the gamble and just headed to the third choice. As soon as he got there he did not pull right into the parking lot, he just slowly drove by it, to see what cars were parked there. He instantly saw the two cars. He drove about a block away, so he could walk in and see everything around the motel. As he was walking in, he looked at the back of the buildings, and then he went right to the front office. He told the manager that he was meeting a friend here, but he was not told the unit number. So he asked to see the motel roster of people renting rooms. The manager said that he could not go through the roster because it was against their policy, and it was a privacy issue as well.             He then asked the manager what unit the people from those cars went into. The manager told him he did not know. Joe was getting very impatient and frustrated. Joe pulls out a knife and goes behind the office counter, where only the manager was. He grabbed the manager, pushes him against the wall, and plunges the knife into his heart. The manager collapses onto the floor. Joe pulled him to a back closet and pushed him in and shut the door. He then went back to the front desk and grabbed the unit roster, and headed outside to go to each unit, to verify who was in it. He got to unit one, and he knocked on the door. He heard a voice say “who is it?” Joe said “the manager.” the man opened the door and asked what he wanted. Joe just said that he was checking to make sure that who checked in, is the person on my roster. He went to the second and third and did the same thing, and got the same result. When he got to the fourth unit, he knocked hard, because he was exasperated, and wanted to finish the job.             The Detective was in unit 5, with Scott and Amanda. They heard the knocking on unit 4, and then they heard the voice. Scott said, “that is Joe.” He also spied out the curtain and verified that it was Joe. He said “he looks like Joe in disguise.” Detective Smith quickly insisted that the two of them get into the bathroom and hide. When suddenly there was the knock on the door. The Detective said “who is it, and what do you want?” Joe said that “he needed to verify that you are who you say you are.” He said through the door, “I am kind of in the middle of something here, can you come back later?” Joe said “no, I need to verify with you now, please open the door.” The Detective pulled out his gun. He knew from what he had been told by Amanda, that they all needed protection, and that this story was too big for anyone to keep to themselves. He put his gun against the door, as to shoot Joe through it; but Joe had the same reaction, and pulled out his gun and put it up to the door as well. But Joe pulled the trigger first!             The Detective was shot in the chest. He fell to the ground, firing his gun through the door at Joe, and calling on the radio, “officer down, need assistance at,” as another bullet went through his head. During the commotion Scott and Amanda, were able to pry the bars away from the window and climb out. They started to run far from the motel, leaving his car in the parking lot. After Joe shot Detective Smith in the head, he went running around the room searching for the two, he was there to kill. He ran into the bathroom and noticed that the bars had been pried away from the window. He ran outside to see if he could find them. Then he heard the Police sirens that had been called by the other tenants renting rooms. Joe ran from the motel. He made it to his car, which was parked a block away before the police got to the motel. A few of the renters, got a good look at him and gave a description to the police securing the area, but they did not see the car he was driving.             All the information that was given to Detective Smith during the interview, died with him. Scott and Amanda were back to square one, and no one to trust. The two of them hid in an abandoned building for a little while, just so Joe would leave the area, and search someplace else. Scott was beside himself. They were literally on their own, and being hunted. They caught a bus that took them close to Scott’s home. As soon as they got off the bus, they ran to his house. His house was one place that he felt he could control the outcome, if Joe came knocking. Scott turned on the TV to the local news channel. They were talking about the m******e that happened at the motel they were at. They mentioned that two people were killed there. One being the police Detective and the other the manager of the motel. They had underestimated Joe and his ability to kill without prejudice. Scott went to his gun safe and pulled out several guns and loaded them. He gave one to Amanda, and told her, aim to kill. Scott said that “Joe will kill you first, if you hesitate to shoot him.”             Earlier that day, the body that was setup to be Joe was found, and since it looked like him, with his identification, the police did not even question that it was him. So they were not looking for Joe any longer. While they were watching TV, the news also talked about the body of Joe Baker, that was found executed, and anyone with information to his murder was asked to call the tip hotline, or the local police station. Scott called the tip hotline and gave an anonymous tip, about Joe, and how he was not dead, that he was the one that killed the people at the motel. The operator tried to get more information about who it was giving the tip, but Scott was not going to budge. He did ask for the number of the Detective in charge of the investigation, the operator gave Scott the number and then he hung up. Scott lived not too far from a shopping center. The two of them walked there, and Scott purchased a prepaid cell phone, to call the Detective about the investigation.             After they got the phone, he called the Detective, and said “I have information about the shooting at the motel.” The detective asks how he knew the information. Scott said “because we were there, and he was trying to kill us as well.” Then he told the Detective that “it was Joe, and that the body they found was not him.” Scott then asked, “by chance, what color are your eyes?” He answered with “blue.” Scott said “good, I will be in touch.” Detective Jones was the one in charge of the investigation. He contacted the coroner about the body of Joe, and was told that they confirmed that it was Joe. He said “how,” and was told “by his driver’s license.” Detective Jones told him to gather dental records, and DNA, since they needed to be sure. He told the coroner about the call that he received, and that raised new questions, for both of them. He thought that if the call was true, then they know who to search after; especially since the description he received at the motel, kind of resembled Joe; just in a disguise.             The Coroner told the Detective that they would work as fast as they could, to verify the identity of the body. Detective Jones went back to the station, to put his report together, when a couple of officers approached him, asking why he was questioning the identity of the man in the morgue. He just told them that he got an anonymous tip, and he was verifying the information. Detective Jones asked the officers, what their concern was. They told him that “they found the body, and it was an open and shut case, it was a d*******l gone wrong.” Then they were told again “just following a tip.” The officers seemed very disgruntled that the Detective was questioning their find. Detective Jones told them “they needed to back off and let him do his job.” They walked away bellyaching to themselves, about the Detective. He was not going to let two rooky officers, get in the middle of his investigation, since he had been on the job for 17 years. He was waiting for Scott to call him back, since he was unable to get Scott’s burner phone number. Scott and Amanda were at Scott’s home still putting together a plan of attack. They had to be more on the offensive to stop Joe. They also needed help. Scott was pacing around his home, looking through the blinds every few minutes, checking for anyone approaching his house.             Joe was getting aggravated, that it was this hard to kill these two individuals. He went back to see Colonel Wyatt, checking to see if he had received any new data on their whereabouts. He told Joe that he got a call from two officers at the police stations, who were “Hybrids” like himself, stating that the new Detective in charge of the investigation was questioning the validity of your body double. That just made Joe enraged, that they were causing so much trouble for them. Joe knew that he had to stop this Detective as well, but he had to make it look like a regular accident, because this entire thing was becoming to public, and the “Naturals” were getting cantankerous. That just means trouble for everybody! Joe wanted to find out what kind of car the Detective drove, and where he parked it, day and night. The two “Hybrid” officers were given that mission, of gathering that information, and then helping Joe set up the event that would kill Detective Jones. The two kept an eye on the Detective, watching him come and go from his desk, waiting for him to go to his car.             The Detective received one of the calls he was waiting for. It was from the coroner. He told him that he needed to come down to the morgue. He had new information, which is not public. He walked through the police station, stopping at the Captain’s office, informing him that there may be a new lead in the investigation. He left the office, heading to the parking lot to get his car. The two “Hybrid” officers were already in the parking lot, at different ends, to watch for the Detective. He made it to his car, not knowing that he was being watched. He drove up the ramp to exit the main road, and headed over to the county morgue. He arrived at the morgue, and the coroner was outside waiting for him to show up. He was very enthusiastic about what the found. He rushed the Detective in the building, shut and locked the door behind them. He uncovered the corpse that was already on the slab. He said that he found many discrepancies, once he started looking. The first thing, dental x-rays do not match. Then he said that can just be an oversite, so he looked further. Next his fingerprints, they have all been burnt off. But look at his right ring finger, it has been broken and fused to his pinky finger. The original report said that he wore a large gold nugget ring on his right ring finger, not possible. Next we received his medical records, Joe had Asthma, and apparently it was pretty bad sometimes. This guy, very heavy smoker lungs, with cancer in his lungs as well. He would not have been able to smoke, with the Asthma he had listed in his records. So he told the Detective that his professional opinion, “this is diffidently not Joe, it was a set-up, to keep the real Joe alive and kicking.” The Detective asked “who have you told about this,” as the coroner replied “you are the only one.” He told the coroner to keep it that way, for the rest of the day, and let Me work this angle, under the radar, and see what pops up. The Detective now was just waiting for Scott to call him, even though he had no idea who it really was on the other end of the burner phone. He went back to his car and sat there for a moment. He was looking through the reports from the motel. He opened up the evidence bag that contained the notes of Detective Smith. When Joe killed him he was in such a rush, that he forgot to take his notes. At first he thought the words written in the notepad, was a joke, until he realized that there was blood stains on the paper. He thought for a minute, whatever is in these notes got him killed. Detective Jones continued to read the notes and thought that he was reading a science fiction report. He really needed the phone call from Scott to shed some light on these events, even more than he already had. Scott and Amanda decided that it was time to call the Detective again. He pulled out the burned phone and dialed his number. The Detective answered and then said that he has been anxiously waiting for this call. Detective Jones asked him to trust him just enough, to tell him his name. The phone went quiet for a few seconds and then the Detective said “are you still there,” then he heard, “Scott is my name.” He told Scott, that he had in his hands, Detective Smiths notes, and he has read them. He asked if this is what got him killed, Scott said “yes.” Scott told the Detective about Amanda, and how Joe played a part in this as a murderer. He had a hard time believing what he was being told, and then Scott told him “he needed to keep an open mind, about this.” The Detective agreed that he would. He told the Detective about the Hazel eyes, and how to tell which side they potentially are on. He thought about the two officers for a moment, and then he said to Scott, “I have seen the eyes you are talking about.” He told Scott about the two officers asking questions, about the body in the morgue, that they said was Joe. They seemed very disconcerted, that he was rocking the boat. He said “he thinks that they might end up being a problem.” Scott asked if he would like to meet, and the Detective said “yes. How do you want to do it?” Scott gave him an address, just across the street from his house. He told the Detective he would watch for him there. The Detective said “he will be there, and he will follow their instructions, because he knew that the last time someone met with these two, people got killed.” The Detective pulled out of the morgue parking lot and started to head towards the address that Scott gave him. As he was driving down the highway, he noticed that there was something wrong with his car. The brake pedal had no tension on it, when he pushed it with his foot; it went right to the ground. The car had no brakes! He was traveling 55 MPH down the highway, and he saw red taillights just ahead. He tried to slow the car down, by putting it in a lower gear, but that did not do enough. He slammed the gear shifter into park! The gears in the car started to grind, as he got closer to the red taillights. He knew that he did not want to hit some other car and hurt an innocent person. He quickly veered off the road to the right hand side of the highway, onto the dirt hill. He hit it fast enough, that the car rolled onto its side and slid about 20 feet.  As soon as the car came to a sliding halt, he was able to climb out the passenger’s side window. By then there were people running towards his car to see if he was okay. The Detective had a cut just above his left eye, which was going to need a stitch or two. But other than that and being very shook up, he was in good shape. But he could not say the same thing about his car. The highway patrol and an ambulance showed up after a few minutes. They took a statement from the Detective and took pictures of the underneath of the car since it was still on its side. What they saw, is that the break lines to both front tires had been cut; and it was very clear, that it was intentional. Someone wanted him out of the picture, and off the investigation. He got a ride to the hospital, where he met his Captain, who was checking to make sure he was okay. He told the Detective to take the rest of the day off. But he told Captain Lewis that he had some important leads to follow up on, so he would need to check out a patrol car. Captain Lewis asked if he was sure that is what he wanted to do since he agreed with Detective Jones, that the accident had something to do with this investigation. He caught a ride with the Captain back to the station, where he checked out a patrol car. He noticed the two officers that questioned him, where standing out in the parking lot just watching him, as he pulled away in the patrol car. Since this car was a patrol car, it had a camera on it, so if anyone approached it, they would be on camera. Scott was wondering what was taking the Detective so long. He knew that he should have been there by now. So he called the Detective and asked him if he was still coming. He told Scott what had happened, and when Scott heard what had happened to the Detective, the blood in Scott’s body seemed to run cold. His face went white, and Amanda looked at him and started to panic. She said “what has happened!” Scott finished the call and told Amanda what had just happened to the Detective’s car, on his way over here. They both got very worried, because they did not want to see someone else get killed over what they knew. As the Detective was driving to the address, he kept his eyes open, and kept looking all around him, to make sure he was not being followed. Once he got off the highway, he took side streets, just so he could see if any other cars were on his tail. He made several extra turns and stops, but did not see anyone following him. So he proceeded to the address. When he pulled up, it was not a house; it was a church parking lot, so he pulled in and parked. He just sat there and waited for a signal from Scott. Scott and Amanda watched him pull up and park. They just watched for several minutes, to see if anyone else randomly showed up. They felt that it was safe, so they went out to the corner of Scott’s yard and stood there, until the Detective saw them and got out of his car. He started to walk to towards them, very slowly, as he watched up and down the street.
