Chapter 5: Storm of Accusations

1402 Words
Elena felt the shift in the air the moment she and Harrison stepped back inside the grand estate. The usual hum of servants and guards had changed into something tense and watchful. News of the ruthless alpha claiming her as his own had spread fast, and now eyes followed them everywhere. She stayed close to his side, drawing strength from his solid presence even as worry gnawed at her insides. Lucas was resting more comfortably thanks to the healer, but the real danger still circled them like hungry wolves. They had barely entered the main hall when Matthew appeared, flanked by several of his strongest warriors. The younger alpha looked furious, his handsome face twisted with barely contained rage. He was tall like his brother but lacked the raw, battle hardened edge that made Harrison so intimidating. Where Harrison carried scars and quiet power, Matthew wore fine clothes and relied on schemes. "What the hell do you think you're doing, brother?" Matthew snarled, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. "You can't just take one of my pack members like she's some prize you won." Harrison stopped walking, pulling Elena slightly behind him in a protective move that felt both natural and possessive. "Your pack member?" he repeated, his tone deceptively calm. "From what I hear, you've treated her worse than dirt for seven years. Drugged her, used her, then tossed her aside when she carried a child. And now you want to play the caring alpha?" Matthew's eyes flicked to Elena with clear disdain. "She's nothing but a lying servant who got herself pregnant to trap me. That bastard child isn't even mine. Everyone knows it." The words hit Elena like a slap. She stepped forward before she could stop herself, her newly awakened wolf surging with anger. "How dare you," she said, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. "You know exactly what happened that night. You and your friends forced that drink on me. I woke up broken and alone while you celebrated with your real mate." A crowd was gathering again, drawn by the raised voices of two powerful alphas facing off. Lila lurked near the back, her face pale but eyes gleaming with spite. Harrison's hand found Elena's, squeezing gently. The contact sent a wave of calm through her even as his own power flared outward, making several weaker wolves in the room take involuntary steps back. "Interesting," Harrison said slowly, his dark eyes locked on his brother. "Because my wolf recognized her the moment we touched. The mate bond is there, strong and undeniable. And the boy..." He let the words hang heavy in the air. "I have healers examining him right now. Blood tests don't lie, Matthew. If that child carries Black Flame blood, you will answer for everything you've done." Matthew laughed, but it sounded forced and brittle. "You always did think you were better than me. The big ruthless alpha who conquers packs while I build alliances. Well this time you're wrong. She's just a w***e trying to climb ranks by spreading her legs for whoever has more power." The insult barely left his mouth before Harrison moved. In a blur of speed, he had Matthew by the throat, lifting him several inches off the ground. Gasps rippled through the watching crowd. Matthew's warriors reached for their weapons but froze when Harrison's own men stepped forward, eyes glowing with readiness for battle. "Call her that again," Harrison growled, his voice low and deadly, "and I will end our bloodline right here. No more games. No more lies. Elena and the boy are coming with me tomorrow. If you try to stop us, I will tear this pack apart piece by piece." He released Matthew, who stumbled back coughing and clutching his throat. The younger alpha's face burned with humiliation and hatred as he straightened his collar. "You'll regret this," Matthew spat. "There are things about that night you don't understand. Forces bigger than both of us. If you take her, you'll bring destruction on your own head." Elena watched the exchange with her heart in her throat. Part of her wanted to shrink away from the violence, but another part, the part that had survived years of cruelty, felt a fierce satisfaction seeing Matthew finally challenged. Harrison turned to her, his expression softening instantly as he checked if she was okay. "I'm fine," she whispered, though her mind raced with questions. What did Matthew mean by bigger forces? Was there more to that night than just his cruelty? Later that evening, after checking on Lucas again and finding him sleeping peacefully with color returning to his cheeks, Elena found herself alone with Harrison in his private quarters. The room felt different now, less like a place of stolen passion and more like the beginning of something real. Candles flickered on the heavy wooden table, casting warm light across ancient tapestries depicting old wolf legends. Harrison poured them both glasses of rich red wine, though neither drank much. He seemed restless, pacing slowly near the window that overlooked the dark forest beyond the estate. "I meant what I said earlier," he told her quietly. "Tomorrow we leave. My pack lands are secure and far from my brother's reach. You'll have proper healers, a real home for you and the boy, everything you both deserve." Elena sat on the edge of the large bed, twisting her hands in her lap. "But what if he's right? What if taking us causes war? I don't want to be the reason packs bleed." He stopped pacing and knelt in front of her, taking her smaller hands in his large ones. Up close like this, she could see the faint lines of exhaustion and worry on his strong face. This ruthless alpha, feared by so many, carried his own burdens. "War was coming long before you," he said. "Matthew has been making dangerous alliances, dabbling in forbidden magic to increase his power. That night seven years ago might have been part of something darker than just his lust. The drug they gave you wasn't ordinary. My scouts have found traces of shadow magic in other incidents." Elena's breath caught. Shadow magic. Old stories spoke of it as power stolen from the void between realms, dangerous and corrupting. If Matthew had used something like that... "Lucas," she whispered. "If he's really your son..." "Then he is the heir to the Black Flame Pack," Harrison finished, his voice thick with emotion he rarely showed. "And I will protect him with my life. Both of you." He pulled her into his arms then, holding her close against his chest. She breathed in his familiar scent of pine and smoke, letting it ground her. Their lips met in a kiss that started gentle but quickly deepened with all the unspoken fears and desires between them. Clothes fell away slowly this time, not in drugged frenzy but with deliberate care. Harrison worshipped every inch of her skin with his hands and mouth, murmuring promises and praises that made her feel truly seen for the first time in years. Their bodies moved together with building intensity, the mate bond glowing warmly between them. Elena cried out his name as pleasure washed over her in waves, and Harrison followed soon after, holding her like she was the most precious thing in his violent world. Afterward, as they lay tangled in the sheets listening to the distant sounds of the night forest, Harrison traced lazy patterns on her bare shoulder. "Whatever secrets that night holds," he said softly, "we will uncover them together. No more running. No more hiding in servant quarters. You are my mate, Elena. My queen. And I am done letting my brother destroy what is mine." She nodded against his chest, hope and fear warring inside her. Tomorrow they would leave this place of painful memories. But she knew Matthew would not let them go without one final attempt to keep his secrets buried. Spies, traps, and perhaps even darker forces waited in the shadows. For now, though, wrapped in the arms of her ruthless alpha, Elena allowed herself to dream of a future where her son could grow strong and loved, where she could finally stand tall beside the man the Moon Goddess had chosen for her. The storm was coming, but this time she would not face it alone.
