Chapter 53 DANIEL I went downstairs after that and didn't go back up for hours, pouring myself a drink I barely touched, sitting in the dark of my study replaying the whole conversation over and over, turning it from every angle I could manage. I'd expected tears if I finally pushed hard enough. That was what I'd braced myself for, walking up those stairs, the old, familiar crumple of her face that used to follow any real confrontation between us, the version of Nora who couldn't handle real conflict without falling apart in front of me. I hadn't gotten tears. I'd gotten anger, cold and sharp and entirely unfamiliar, a version of my wife I hadn't known existed until she stood there in our bedroom and threw every one of my own failures back at me with a precision I hadn't been prepared
