I told Daniel I had a dentist appointment, then errands after, wedding thank you cards to order, the kind of small dull tasks a new wife handles without her husband needing to think twice about them. He barely looked up from his laptop when I mentioned it, already deep in something on his screen, already half gone into whatever world he lived in when he wasn't performing for me.
"Take the car," he said. "I'll have Marcus swing by for lunch."
I kept my face easy. "Sounds good."
I drove almost an hour outside the city, further than I needed to for a dentist appointment that didn't exist, until the roads narrowed and the buildings thinned out into the kind of small town nobody from Daniel's circle would ever have a reason to visit. I found the cafe from a search on my pho
