She typed for a moment, her face giving nothing away, and I stood there with my hands pressed flat against the counter to keep them from shaking, the exact same posture I remembered from a different bureau in a different life, staring at a different clerk delivering a different kind of ruin.
"Here it is," she said finally. "Filed the day you said. Everything's processed. Sealed under both names, standard for a fast filing like this one. Nothing unusual."
Relief went through me so fast it almost buckled my knees, and I had to grip the counter edge harder to keep my face from showing how much that single sentence had just meant to me.
"Thank you," I said. "That's a relief. I just wanted to make sure."
