I was barely through the front door, my keys still in my hand, when my phone buzzed with a text I didn't expect.
I'm outside. We need to talk. Face to face. Now.

I stood in the hallway staring at the screen, my stomach dropping fast. Daniel had texted twenty minutes earlier saying he was leaving the office, which meant I had maybe ten minutes before his car pulled into the driveway, and Adrian was standing outside my front door asking to come in like this was any ordinary house he had any ordinary right to walk into.
I opened the door before he could knock and pulled him inside fast, glancing past him at the empty street like Daniel might already be rounding the corner.
