Adrian called me late, later than he usually risked, and something in his voice when I picked up told me immediately this wasn't about Daniel's uncle or the fire paperwork or any of the careful, patient work we'd been building for months.
"Harry Cole reached out to one of my contacts," he said, no preamble. "Asking about the Rayne name. Said someone had been asking him pointed questions about it at a charity gala, trying to get him worried enough to bring it back to Daniel."

"Sophia," Adrian said. "According to what I heard, she cornered him, hinted that you might be more trouble than Daniel realizes, tried to get him digging into your motives."
