Hephaestus held the gem in his hand for a moment too long. He could feel it vibrating.
Every mineral had a vibrational signature, whether it was an innate, structural one, an endowed one based on the location, one that was gained through osmosis, based on the proximal location of other vibrations, or a combination of all those sources. Hephaestus spent enough time with stones and metals that he could identify some elements simply by the way that they felt. Of course, being a god might factor into that as well. None of the other Olympians claimed to have a similar trait though, so Hephaestus chose to believe that it was a talent which he had cultivated.
