CHAPTER 4

Emily smiled at her, but it seemed more like a challenge than a friendly gesture. “Oh C’mon, I've worked for the Gibson's family for 5years, I know everything, and I know that you and your husband… you two aren't exactly the picture of a happy couple.” “I'm not sure what you're insinuating, Emily, I think it's best if we focus on the task at hand. The file you need is on the desk.” Diana said, her eyes locked onto Emily's, and her gaze piercing. The air between them seemed to vibrate with tension, each woman waiting for the other to make a move. Emily's smile faltered for a moment, but then she regained her composure. With her eyes narrowed and her gaze piercing. “ You know, Diana, I think we understand each other. You see, your husband and I… we have a connection. A connection beyond just business.” Emily added, with an intention of provoking Diana. The air seemed to thicken, heavy with tension, as Diana's anger reached a boiling point. But she refused to rise to the bait, knowing exactly what Emily is trying to do. Instead, she smiled sweetly, her eyes locked on Emily's. “I'm glad to hear, Emily. I'm sure my husband appreciates your… dedication. Just continue doing your secretary job that you're being paid for. Now please, take the file you came here for, and leave my house.” Emily's expression faltered, and for a moment, Diana saw a glimmer of uncertainty. But then, she smiled again, her confidence restored. ”Thank you, I'll just take this and be on my way.” As she left the mansion, Diana felt a sense of unease, knowing she had just caught a glimpse of the woman who had been sleeping with her husband. The encounter had left her feeling raw and vulnerable, but she knew she couldn't let it get to her. She had to keep her cool, for her own sake. Despite her unhappiness, Diana tried to make the best of her situation. She attended a social event with Julian, played the role of the perfect wife, and supported his business ventures. As they got to the venue, the flashbulbs popped, casting a kaleidoscope of colors across the red carpet. Diana smiled brightly, her eyes sparkling with a hint of desperation. She stood beside Julian, her hand resting on his arm, as they posed for the cameras. “Mr Julian, Diana, you look stunning!” a reporter exclaimed. “What's it like being one of the most powerful couples in the city?” Julian's smile was charming, his eyes gleaming with confidence. “We're just happy to be here, supporting a great cause.” He said, his voice smooth as silk. Diana's smile faltered for a moment, but she recovered quickly.” Yes, it's wonderful to be here.” She added, her voice barely above a whisper. As they made their way down the red carpet, Diana felt like a puppet on strings. She thought about the emptiness she felt inside, the desperation to break free from the expectations and obligations that came with being Julian's wife. She wondered if anyone would notice if she disappeared. The cameras continued to snap, capturing the perfect image of their marriage. Diana and Julian entered the event room, the buzz of conversation and clicking of glasses filled the air. Julian walked ahead, not bothering to wait for Diana or offer his arm. Diana followed, her eyes scanning the room as people turned to stare. “Is that the new Mrs Gibson?” Someone whispered. “ She looks so different from Julian.” “I know right? They're not exactly the picture of a perfect couple.” Another guest replied, raising an eyebrow. Diana's face grew hot as she tried to ignore the whispers , she kept her head held high, her smile fixed in place. Meanwhile Julian had spotted Emily, his secretary across the room. A smile spread across his face as he made his way to her table. “Look, it's Julian and Emily,” someone said, nudging their companion. “They look more like a couple than Julian and his wife do.” The whispers grew louder, with some guests speculating about the nature of Julian's relationship with Emily. Diana's discomfort deepened as she watched Julian laugh and chat with his secretary. As Julian leaned closer to whisper something to Emily's ear, the guests around them couldn't help but stare. Diana felt a pang of unease, wondering if everyone knew about Julian's infidelity except her.
