They didn’t have much time.
The ritual had to be performed at Mirror Lake—the place where the barrier between worlds was weakest. The place where Elara had first felt the thing watching her.
Ren packed supplies—a ritual knife, a circle of salt, and the pendant—while Theo gathered extra flashlights. But as they stepped outside, Elara hesitated.
The shadows were too deep.
The streets were too quiet.
And somewhere, just beyond the edges of the light, something was waiting.
Theo touched her shoulder. “We’ve got this.”
Elara nodded. She wanted to believe him.
They reached the lake in under ten minutes. The water was unnaturally still, the surface reflecting only darkness.
Ren moved quickly, drawing the circle of salt around Elara. “Once we start, you can’t leave this circle. No matter what happens.”
Elara swallowed. “And if it tries to stop me?”
Ren met her gaze. “Then fight.”
Theo grabbed her hand. “We won’t let it take you.”
Elara squeezed his fingers, then stepped inside the circle. It was time.
Ren began the chant, voice steady. The salt glowed faintly, and Elara’s breath hitched as the air turned heavy.
Then—a whisper.
"You don’t want to do this."
The lake’s surface rippled. The shadows around them began to move.
Theo grabbed the ritual knife, shoving it into Elara’s hands. “Stay with me.”
The voice came again, stronger now. From inside her own mind.
"I’ve always been with you, Elara."
Her body locked up.
Memories flooded her mind—all the times she’d seen the shadows, all the moments she’d ignored the whispers. Had it always been there? Had she always belonged to it?
She felt it wrapping around her, pulling her under.
Then—
Theo’s voice. Desperate. “Elara, fight it!”
She gasped. Her fingers curled around the knife. She had a choice.
Let it take her.
Or end this now.
With a scream, she drove the blade into the ground at her feet. The salt burst into light.
The entity shrieked—not in rage, but in fear.
The shadows around the lake collapsed, twisting violently as if being torn apart. A force ripped through Elara’s chest, and for a second, she thought she might not survive—
But then—
Silence.
The air was light again.
The lake was just a lake.
And Elara… was still here.
She fell forward, gasping, and Theo caught her before she hit the ground.
Ren exhaled sharply. “It’s over.”
Elara’s hands still trembled. But for the first time in her life, the shadows weren’t watching her.
She was finally free.
