EPILOGUE:THE LAST REFLECTION

396 Words
A week had passed since Mirror Lake, and Elara was still adjusting to the silence. For years, she had lived with a constant presence—the whispering, the shadows, the feeling of being watched. It had become part of her life, something she had learned to live with, even when she didn’t understand what it truly was. Now, it was gone. And in its absence, Elara realized just how much space it had taken up inside her. She no longer jerked awake at 3 AM to a breath that wasn’t hers. She no longer felt the itch of unseen eyes tracing her movements. The air in her home was lighter, the corners of her room just ordinary darkness, not something waiting to unfold and consume her. Still, habits were hard to break. She hesitated before turning off the lights. Paused before stepping in front of mirrors, expecting something to be wrong. But nothing ever was. Tonight, she stood in her bathroom, staring at her own reflection. Just her. The bruises on her arms were fading, but they were reminders of what she had survived. The exhaustion in her eyes hadn’t left, but now it was layered with something new—strength. She pressed her fingers against the cool glass. For so long, mirrors had terrified her. She had avoided them, knowing that what looked back might not be her. Now, she traced her reflection’s outline, breathing steadily. “Just me,” she whispered. “Only me.” She reached for the light switch. Then—a flicker of movement. Her heart seized, breath hitching. She snapped her head to the side, muscles coiling, ready to run. But there was nothing. Just the usual shadows in the corners of the room. Just the faint hum of the streetlights outside. No eyes in the darkness. No whispers in the air. She laughed softly—part relief, part disbelief. The fear was still inside her, buried deep, but she was learning to let it go. It was over. She turned off the light and walked away. Never looking back. --- Bonus Scene: Elsewhere… In the quiet of another home, in a house untouched by horror, a mirror stood in the dark. The glass was smooth. Unbroken. Silent. Then, deep within its depths—something shifted. A whisper curled through the empty space. "I see you." --- The End. ---
