Dominic's POV Mrs. Kowalski takes the girls for the night. Her choice, offered without prompting on Thursday. She appeared at the door with her overnight bag and said, "Give them to me tonight. You're newlyweds. Act like it," and left before Emma could argue. So the apartment is ours. Emma spends the afternoon cooking, not stress baking, just cooking because she wants to. She puts music on, something low and French that she found on a playlist Celeste mentioned, and moves through the kitchen with the unhurried ease of someone with nowhere to be. I work for two hours at my desk and then stop because Singapore can wait and this can't, or rather this won't always be available in exactly this form and I've learned to recognize that. I pour two glasses of champagne and bring one to the kit
