After that, their interactions increased frequently. Akira could always count on Kaito to draw her out of her demanding schedule and into calm moments. At any time, Akira reassured herself, it was always informal. However, the longer they were together, the more difficult it was to ignore the way his presence made her feel
After yet another exhausting training day, Akira found herself sitting beside the same clearing one evening. Her eyes had become accustomed to the sight of the firefly, and she found unexpected solace in their soft brightness.
Kaito said, "You're here early tonight," coming from behind her.
When Akira turned, she was not shocked to see him standing there grinning as usual. "Needed a little air," she answered.
Sitting next to her, Kaito rested on his hands. "I believe you're beginning to enjoy this place,"
Akira grinned. "Avoid putting yourself too forward.”
Kaito laughed and answered, "Oh, I won't." "However, it's nice to see you relax a little."
"Unwind?" Akira furrowed her brow. "Kaito, I remain the same person."
"Yes, but you don't have to be the same all the time," he remarked in a light-hearted yet insightful manner. "You can be calm and strong at the same time."
Akira stopped talking and just stared at the fireflies for a while. How about you? What justification do you have?
Startled, Kaito turned to look at her. "My apology?"
"You're here for me at all times," she said. "Why?"
Kaito, feeling a little uneasy, abruptly scratched the back of his neck. "Well, perhaps I just enjoy enjoy being with you.
Akira blinked, taken aback by the abrupt candour. "Why me?" "Because you're... different," Kaito muttered. "Yes, you are strong, but you're also—" "And what?"
For reasons she wasn't really sure of, Akira pushed, her heart pounding. With a smile, Kaito met her eyes. "You underestimate your own abilities. And, I suppose,
I'm curious to know the person's identity. Akira was silent for a while.
She wasn't prepared for the honesty in his voice or the intensity of his words, which took her by surprise.
At last, speaking in a softer tone than normal, she murmured, "You're strange, Kaito." "Perhaps," grinned Kaito in agreement.
Akira, I really do mean it. It's not necessary to keep everything locked away.
Akira faltered, her barriers weakening. She wanted to disappoint them, if only for a short while, for the first time.
*****
One evening, Akira found herself standing outside Kaito's tent at a late hour. She was unsure of what had brought her here, other than the fact that she couldn't get the words out of her head.
She inhaled deeply before delicately tapping the post.
"Kaito?"
Before the flap opened and Kaito emerged, his hair dishevelled from sleep, there was a rustling sound coming from inside.
"Akira? What's going on? His anxiety was evident as he asked.
"I... Her voice was softer than normal when she said, "I just wanted to talk."
Kaito's face became more amicable. Naturally. Enter now.
She entered and settled upon a mat, feeling the warmth of the tent enveloping her. With curious and worried gaze, Kaito sat across from her.
I’ve been thinking about what you said,” Akira began, her fingers fidgeting with the hem of her shirt.
“What part?” Kaito asked gently.
“About… not having to prove anything,” Akira admitted. “It’s hard for me. I’ve spent my whole life trying to be someone. To live up to something.”
Kaito nodded, waiting for her to continue.
“And I guess I don’t know how to stop,” she whispered. “I don’t know who I am if I’m not… this.”
Kaito reached out, taking her hand in his. “You’re Akira. And that’s enough.”
For the first time, Akira felt a weight lift from her chest. She looked at Kaito, truly seeing him, and in that moment, something between them shifted.
Akira started, twitching the hem of her blouse with her fingers, "I've been thinking about what you said." Which part?
Kaito enquired politely.
Akira said, "About... not having to prove anything." "I find it difficult." I've tried to be someone all my life. to fulfil a duty. Waiting for her to continue, Kaito nodded.
She said, "And I guess I don't know how to stop." "If I'm not... this, I have no idea who I am."
Reaching out, Kaito took her hand in his. "Your name is Akira. And that's sufficient.
Akira felt a weight lift from her chest for the first time. Something changed between them when she gazed at Kaito and really saw him.It was genuine even though it wasn't spectacular or abrupt.
And for the first time in a very long time, Akira gave herself permission to think that perhaps, just perhaps, she wasn't the only one who couldn't bear the weight of the world.
**Later That Evening**
The tent felt more intimate than usual, and there was an unfamiliar, unsaid energy to the silence between them. Akira's eyes continued to linger on Kaito's hand as it rested over hers. Although she wasn't sure what to anticipate, she found solace in the warmth of his touch. But there was more, something she hadn't experienced in a while.
"Kaito..." she started, faltering in her speech as she wasn't sure where to take the discussion.
"Yes?" His eyes never left hers as he said quietly.
She acknowledged, with a little shake of her head, "You confuse me." "I've always had a direction, a clear aim. However, as of late...
"I understand that," Kaito remarked as he inched forward. However, it might not be about the route you're taking. Perhaps it matters who walks it with you.
Akira gasped for air. It was not what she had anticipated—that he would say anything so... genuine. Her heart skipped a beat, and she found herself at a loss for words.
Whispering, "I'm not good at this," Akira said. "I have trouble letting people in."
"You're not required to be," Kaito answered. "You simply have to give it a shot."
Her mind racing, she fixed her gaze on him. She had never encountered somebody like Kaito. He wasn't attempting to put her to the test or expecting her to be someone she wasn't. He was simply with her here. For her.
Akira said, "I don't know if I can," as her heart raced. She turned her head away.her heart was racing.
Reaching out, Kaito turned her face back to his while softly touching her chin. He touched carefully and softly. "You're already there," he said as his gaze met hers.
Akira experienced a wonderful and terrible sensation as her chest tightened and her breath caught. She felt the weight of the moment bearing down on her, driving her in the direction of an unknowable, uncontrollable entity.
"Kaito." Her body was betraying the boundaries she'd fought so hard to keep up with, and her voice was now only a whisper.
Leaning closer, Kaito felt the warmth of his body radiating off of hers. "If you tell me to stop, I will."
Akira, though, wished for him to continue. For the first time in forever, she didn’t want to be strong or distant. She just wanted to be… here, with him.
Rather than utter a word, she drew closer, her lips just meeting his in a tentative kiss. When Kaito answered, it was tentative at first and quiet, but then everything inside of her melted.
She wasn't prepared for the tenderness with which his lips touched hers. There was only a leisurely, deliberate investigation of something novel and delicate; there was no hurry or sense of haste. The tension between them vanished completely as Kaito's hands moved to her waist and pulled her in closer as the kiss intensified their anxiety turning into something else completely.
Akira's pulse raced as her hands went to his shoulders and she gripped him tightly as if he were the only thing keeping her grounded and her anchor. As the kiss grew closer, she felt a spark ignite within of her that she was unaware of. It was about the safety, vulnerability, and trust that went along with it, not simply the physical connection.
Their foreheads were resting on each other as they laboured to separate for the last time. Akira opened her eyes and met Kaito's stare. He gave her a gentle smile, his thumb gliding over her cheek.
With a hoarse voice, he muttered, "Akira." "You're... amazing."
Akira cleared her throat and swallowed. "You make it seem so simple."
With his fingers still running down the edge of her jaw, Kaito giggled gently. "Perhaps it is. Or perhaps it's just perfect.
Akira eased her body's stress by leaning into him and placing her head on his chest. His heart's steady pulse was audible to her, and it strangely soothed her own.
She leaned in close to him and said, "This is... different," her hand coiled into his shirt.
Kaito said in a low voice, "it is". You can be unique and not negative. "
Her eyes was closed, Akira allowed herself to enjoy the moment, feeling the warmth of Kaito's arm. She wasn’t thinking of anything or any standard or living to any expectation.
She was just Akira at this moment.
Maybe that was okay for the time being
