- 8 - - 8 -Mother had prepared a big breakfast, which George and James were enjoying when I whisked through the kitchen. She had been taking good care of the menfolk ever since James arrived on Monday night. I didn’t approve. It was Wednesday morning and James showed no signs of leaving or going back to work. He would never leave if Mother kept shoving home-cooked meals at him, not to mention the flirting and doting. Furthermore, Mother’s domestic prowess gave George unrealistic expectations of me. “Would you like some nice bacon and eggs?” Mother asked. “No thanks,” I muttered as I grabbed a cup of coffee. Truthfully, the breakfast smells did not agree with me. I managed some juice and toast with the coffee while standing at the kitchen counter. “Do you have choir practice tonight?”
