- 11 - - 11 -Thumping awoke me. The fire had died and the cabin was cold. An eerie light broke the darkness and moved across the sliding doors, giving a distorted view of the living room. More thumping, scraping, the light reversed its path back across the patio doors. Closer. I strained to look at my watch. What time was it? A more troubling thought: where was George? The thumping transformed into a rumbling and seemed stalled somewhere toward the driveway side of the house. Someone pounded on the door.
