Morning light spilled through the bedroom window, gilding the edge of the bed where Cole slept. I lay on my side, watching him—his chest rising and falling slow and steady, the faint scar on his jaw now healing, the bond between us thrumming warm and constant, like a second heartbeat. It still felt like a miracle. Like any second I’d wake up and he’d be back in the truck at the edge of the trees, waiting for permission to come home.
He opened his eyes and found me watching. A slow, sleepy smile spread across his face. “You staring at me, wife of mine?”
“Not your wife yet.” I brushed a strand of hair back from his face. “Still just… yours.”
