Standing at the crossroads was never my idea of a pastime, although that was what it was turning into, with first one, then another car trundling by. When the road was finally clear and I was about to step out, I felt the rumblings of a truck. Then I saw the metal beast, crossing the bridge and speeding into town. I anticipated the compression brakes to kick in any second, as they did, and eyeing the monster with its mean brow and menacing jaw and its load of logs on its back, my upper lip curled. I didn’t move until the truck had disappeared on its way up the coast. Only then, did I saunter across the highway, making a point of appearing to onlookers a woman with it all in her stride. I stood for a while with my back to the hotel, looking across at the roadhouse and the general store. N
