The Parts of this Story that are True: The Ash Wednesday bush fire really happened on that day in February. I used to live in Cockatoo and based my description on first-hand accounts of that day. Point Hicks lighthouse, the history and its ghost. The logging that occurred throughout the region. Incidental facts such as the end of the Vietnam War and the opening of the first Women’s Refuge. Tamboon Inlet and the wild beaches of Croajingolong. As for Cann River itself, my version is nothing like the real Cann River. I used to stop off at the petrol station at the crossroads on my way down to Melbourne and every time I stood waiting to get back on the coach, I thought the area would make the perfect setting for a dark comedy thriller. So, I wrote one.
