THE SILVER MARK

CHAPTER FIVE Mara couldn't breathe. The chamber beneath Blackthorn Academy was enormous. She had expected a small underground room. Instead, the staircase had opened into a vast stone hall supported by ancient pillars. Silver symbols covered the walls. Five wolves were carved into the stone, each facing a different direction. At the center stood a circular pedestal. And on it rested the Moonstone fragment. It wasn't large. It could have fit inside Mara's palm. Yet it illuminated the entire chamber. Its light wasn't white. It was silver-blue, like moonlight reflected across deep water. Mara took another step. The fragment pulsed. Thump. Her wrist answered. Thump. The crescent mark became brighter. Adrian grabbed her arm. "Don't touch it." Mara looked at him. "Why?" "I don't know what will happen." "Neither do I." "Exactly." She pulled her arm free. "You've spent the entire day telling me what not to do." "Because everything around you is dangerous." "Then help me understand it." Adrian looked at the stone. "I've never been inside this chamber." "How do you know so much?" "Family records." Mara stared at him. "Your family knew about this place?" "Yes." "Did they know about me?" Adrian hesitated. "Not until recently." Mara studied his face. She couldn't decide whether she believed him. Then the fragment pulsed again. This time, the walls responded. Five symbols lit up. Cross. Ashford. Ravencrest. Silverfang. Vale. A sixth symbol appeared beneath them. Mara stepped closer. It was a wolf standing beneath a dark moon. Adrian whispered: "The Moonbound." Mara turned toward him. "You said they're extinct." "They were." "What happened?" "Nobody knows." "That's a lie." Adrian looked at her. "What?" "Everyone here knows something and pretends they don't." Mara pointed toward the walls. "Your family knew about this chamber." She pointed at the Moonstone. "The Council knows about the fragments." She pointed at herself. "And apparently my father sealed my wolf." Her voice cracked. "Yet somehow I'm the only person who knows nothing." Adrian's expression softened. "I understand." "No, you don't." "I grew up in a family where every conversation had a hidden meaning." Mara looked at him. "Then you should understand why I'm angry." "I do." Silence filled the chamber. Then Adrian said: "You're right." Mara blinked. "About what?" "You deserve answers." He walked toward the wall. "Let's find them." --- They spent the next hour examining the carvings. Most were too old to understand. But one inscription was written in modern language. Mara read it aloud. "Five fragments keep the Moonstone asleep." Adrian continued. "Five bloodlines keep the fragments hidden." Mara read the next line. "When the sixth moon rises, the sealed heir shall awaken." She frowned. "Sixth moon?" Adrian shook his head. "I don't know." The next sentence was almost completely destroyed. Mara traced the remaining words with her fingers. "Only..." She moved her hand. "...the heir..." Another piece was missing. Then: "...can restore..." Nothing. Adrian examined the wall. "There's something behind it." Mara looked at him. "How do you know?" "There's a gap." He pressed his hand against a stone. Nothing happened. Mara tried. The stone immediately moved. Adrian stared at her. "You're getting used to doing that." "I'm not." The wall opened. Inside was a small chamber. A wooden box rested on a stone shelf. Mara approached. Her name was carved into the lid. MARA ELISE VALE She stopped. "That's my full name." Adrian stared at the box. "Your father left it." Mara opened it. Inside was a photograph. Her mother. Her father. And a baby. Mara. Her eyes filled with tears. She turned the photograph over. There was a message. For my daughter, when the Moonstone calls her home. Mara's fingers trembled. Below the message was another line. Your mother will tell you I abandoned you. Believe her. Mara frowned. "What?" Adrian looked confused. "Read it again." She did. Your mother will tell you I abandoned you. Believe her. "But why would he tell me to believe a lie?" Adrian shook his head. "I don't know." Mara found another piece of paper beneath the photograph. This one contained only a few words. The wolf is not your enemy. Mara looked at Adrian. "What does that mean?" He didn't answer. A low growl came from somewhere behind them. Mara turned. Nothing. The growl came again. This time, she recognized it. It wasn't outside. It was inside her. She grabbed her chest. "Mara?" "I can hear something." "What?" "A wolf." Adrian's eyes widened. "Your wolf." Mara closed her eyes. The darkness behind them changed. She was no longer in the chamber. She stood in a forest beneath a huge silver moon. A white wolf stood between the trees. Its eyes were the same color as hers. Mara slowly approached. The wolf didn't move. "Are you mine?" The wolf tilted its head. Mara reached out. The wolf touched her hand with its nose. A flood of images entered Mara's mind. Her mother running through a forest. Her father carrying a glowing stone. Five wolves surrounding them. A burning building. A baby crying. Someone screaming. Then darkness. Mara opened her eyes. She was back in the chamber. Adrian was holding her shoulders. "What happened?" She stared at him. "I saw them." "Who?" "My parents." "Are you okay?" Mara nodded slowly. "They were running." "From whom?" "I don't know." She looked toward the Moonstone fragment. "But my father had it." Adrian's face tightened. "Are you sure?" "Yes." A noise came from the staircase. Footsteps. Adrian immediately turned. "Someone's coming." Mara's heart raced. "Who?" "I don't know." The footsteps grew louder. Adrian pulled Mara behind one of the pillars. The chamber door opened. Three figures entered. All wore dark masks. The same silver wolf symbol appeared on their clothing. Mara recognized it. The masked stranger from the library. One of them looked toward the Moonstone fragment. "She's been here." Another replied: "The chamber has awakened." The third figure whispered: "Then the prophecy has begun." Adrian silently moved closer to Mara. She could hear his breathing. One of the masked figures suddenly turned. "Who's there?" Adrian stepped out. The figure froze. "Cross." Adrian's expression was cold. "Leave." The masked figure laughed. "You still believe your family can protect you?" Adrian's eyes flashed gold. "I'm not asking." The three strangers moved toward him. Mara stepped forward. "Stop." All three looked at her. The Moonstone fragment suddenly flared. The masked figures stepped backward. One whispered: "She's stronger than they said." Mara looked at her wrist. The silver mark had changed. The crescent had become a complete circle. Adrian stared. "Mara..." "What?" "Your mark." She looked down. Five tiny symbols had appeared around the circle. One for each founding pack. Then a sixth symbol appeared in the center. The dark wolf beneath the moon. The Moonbound. The masked strangers dropped to one knee. Mara stared at them. "Why are you kneeling?" The leader lowered his head. "Because the lost bloodline has returned." Mara's heart pounded. "What bloodline?" The masked figure looked up. "The one your family died protecting." Adrian stepped forward. "What did the Vale family protect?" The figure smiled beneath the mask. "The truth." Then the chamber shook. The Moonstone fragment lifted from its pedestal. Mara's eyes widened. The stone floated toward her. Adrian reached for her. "Mara, don't!" The fragment touched her palm. A burst of silver light filled the chamber. The masked figures disappeared. The walls cracked. The five wolf symbols shattered. And a voice echoed through the chamber. Not her father's. Not her mother's. Something older. Something enormous. "The heir has awakened." Mara fell to her knees. Adrian caught her before she hit the floor. For several seconds, everything was silent. Then Mara opened her eyes. They were glowing silver. Adrian stared at her. "Mara?" She looked at him. But the voice that came from her wasn't completely hers. "They are coming." Adrian froze. "Who?" Mara's eyes returned to normal. She looked confused. "I don't know." Adrian helped her stand. "We need to leave." Mara looked at the floating Moonstone fragment. It slowly disappeared into her palm. She gasped. "It's inside me." Adrian stared at the mark on her wrist. "No." "What?" His voice was barely audible. "It's not inside you." Mara waited. Adrian looked toward the shattered symbols. "It's waking up through you." --- The next morning, rumors spread throughout Blackthorn. The underground chamber had opened. The Moonstone had awakened. Someone had seen silver light beneath the school. And Adrian Cross had been there. By breakfast, everyone knew. Mara walked into the cafeteria with Nia. Every conversation stopped. Nia whispered: "This is getting worse." Mara looked at her. "You knew about the chamber." Nia froze. "What?" "You knew something existed beneath the school." "I heard rumors." "You didn't tell me." "I didn't think they were real." Mara studied her. "Are you sure?" Nia looked away. That was enough. Mara's stomach tightened. "You know more than you're telling me." Nia's eyes filled with uncertainty. "Mara..." Before she could continue, someone placed a folded note on Mara's tray. No name. No signature. Mara opened it. Five words were written inside. YOUR FRIEND HAS ALREADY BETRAYED YOU. Mara slowly looked at Nia. Nia saw the note. Her face went pale. "I can explain." Mara stepped backward. "What did you do?" Nia didn't answer. Across the cafeteria, Adrian stood watching them. And behind him, Lucian Ashford was smiling. The war for the Moonstone had begun.
