THE DIVORCE, MY REVENGE Chapter Five The Man in the Fire The fire spread across the front of the old Marlowe estate. Elena stood frozen. Her father's letter was still in her hand. Do not trust the Sterling. But most importantly, do not trust the woman who stands beside them. She knows why I was destroyed, Victoria. The name was still turning over in Elena's mind when Damian grabbed her arm. Elena, we have to go. She looked toward the burning entrance. I need to know who did this. "We will find out." "You don't understand." "I understand enough." Another explosion came from inside the house; Damian pulled her toward the back door. They had barely stepped outside when Elena heard something—a sound. A man's voice. She stopped. "Wait." Damian turned. What? Elena looked toward the burning house. "Someone is inside." Damian stared at the flames "Elena, there's no one inside.” "I heard someone." Another sound came from the house. This time, Damian heard it too. A man's voice. Weak. Almost buried beneath the roar of the fire. Damian's expression changed. Stay here. No Elena."I'm coming with you.” He shook his head. "The building could collapse." My father died because people kept secrets from me. I'm not standing here while someone is trapped inside. Damian stared at her for a moment. Then he took her hand. "Stay behind me." They moved toward the side of the house. Smoke filled the air, and the heat became unbearable. Damian kicked open a side entrance. Inside, everything was covered in smoke. "Hello!" Damian shouted. No answer. Then they heard a cough. Elena's heart jumped. Over there. A shadow moved behind the flames. A man was standing near the hallway. Damian immediately moved forward. "Don't move!" The man stumbled; a burning piece of wood fell between them. Damian pulled Elena back. The ceiling groaned. "Damian!" "I've got you." He looked through the flames again; the man was struggling to stand. "Who are you?" Damian shouted, and the man looked toward them. For one brief second, Elena saw his face. Older, Burnt and Terrified. But there was something familiar about him. Then he collapsed, and Damian pushed forward. Elena grabbed his arm. You can't! I have to get him out. You'll get yourself killed. Damian looked into her eyes. Then don't let me before she could answer, he disappeared into the smoke, and Elena stood terrified. Seconds later, Damian returned. He had the man over his shoulder. Move! Demain said. They stumbled out through the back entrance just as part of the roof collapsed. Elena rushed toward them. "Damian!" "I'm fine.” He lowered the unconscious man onto the ground. Elena was kneeling beside him. The man's face was badly burned, but she could still see his features; she stared. Something about him felt familiar. "Who is he?" Damian didn't answer. He was staring at the man, and then suddenly the man's eyes opened. He looked directly at Elena. His lips moved. She leaned closer. "What did you say?" The man's voice was barely audible. Your... father…” Elena froze. She then asked What about my father? The man struggled to breathe. "Wasn't... destroyed... by the Sterlings." Damian's face hardened. Elena looked at him; the man reached weakly toward her. There was. another man. He coughed. "Who?" His eyes moved toward Damian. Fear filled them. Blackwell. Elena's breath caught. Richard Blackwell. Before she could ask anything else, the man lost consciousness. Damian immediately checked his pulse. "He's alive." Elena stared at the burning estate; her revenge had always been simple. The Sterlings destroyed her father. And Damian belonged to the Sterling family. Therefore, Damian belonged on the other side. But now everything was becoming more complicated. Her father's letter had warned her about Victoria. The documents had connected Sterling Holdings to Marlowe Industries. Damian's identity had been used; Blackwell had disappeared. Now a burned stranger had told her another man was involved. Elena looked at Damian. For the first time, she noticed the blood running down the side of his face. You’re hurt. He touched his temple. It's nothing. She reached for him before she could stop herself. Her fingers brushed the blood away. Damian went completely still. So did Elena. For three years, she had imagined touching him again would make her angry. Instead, her heart betrayed her. Damian looked at her hand against his face. "Elena..." She quickly pulled away. Don't. He nodded, but neither of them looked away. The man on the ground suddenly moved. His eyes opened again, and he looked at Elena. Then Damian whispered one final sentence. "She knows..." Elena frowned. "Who?" But he had already lost consciousness again. Damian looked at Elena. Neither of them spoke. The fire continued to burn behind them And Elena finally understood something that frightened her more than the fire. She had spent three years preparing herself to destroy Damian Sterling. But tonight, when she thought he might die inside that burning house.. She realized she couldn't bear to lose him.
