Chapter 2: Found

Ella didn't cry. Not at the altar. Not when her mother screamed her name. She ran. In her white wedding dress, through the back door of the church, into the cold morning air. Her heels clicked on the wet pavement, her bouquet fell behind her, petals scattering like her ruined plans. She didn't stop until the church was out of sight. Three hours later, she was sitting in a dim hotel bar, still in that dress, with a glass of whiskey she hadn't touched. The bartender kept looking at her with pity. "You look like you need an escape plan," a deep voice said. She looked up. He was tall, in a black suit that cost more than her entire wedding. Sharp jaw, cold grey eyes, dark hair perfectly styled. "I'm fine," she whispered. "You're wearing a wedding dress and drinking alone at 11 AM. You're not fine." She laughed, and finally, the tears came. Hard sobs that shook her shoulders. He didn't ask questions. He just sat next to her and handed her a handkerchief. "Alexander Blackwood," he said. "Ella. The bride who didn't get married." For the first time that day, she felt seen. She didn't know he was a billionaire CEO. She only knew his eyes were kind. He ordered her water and toast and listened while she told him everything. How she walked into the bridal suite that morning to find Mark, her fiance of four years, with Sarah, her best friend since kindergarten, her maid of honor. How Sarah said, "You were always too boring for him." How she still tried to walk down the aisle because 200 people were watching, and then halfway down she realized she couldn't marry a liar. So she ran. He told her he was in town to close a billion-dollar deal for Blackwood Enterprises. He hated hotels because they felt empty. He had never been married. He didn't believe in love at first sight, until today. Ella felt safe for the first time since morning. He asked if she had a place to go and she said no. He said, "Stay in my suite tonight. No strings. Just sleep." She should have said no. But she was tired of being the good girl who always did the right thing and got betrayed. For once, she wanted to be reckless. The suite was on the top floor. Floor to ceiling windows, a view of the whole city, and a silence that felt expensive. Alexander poured her tea. He gave her his shirt to change into and left the room while she changed out of her ruined dress. "My fiance," she sobbed, "He was my everything since college. And Sarah was like a sister." Alexander's jaw tightened. "Then he is a fool." "You don't even know me." "I know you deserve better than a man who would do that to you in a white dress. I know you are brave because you ran." "Why are you being so kind to me?" she asked. "Because I was supposed to be at a wedding today too. My brother's. I didn't go. I don't do well with happy endings. They feel like lies. Until I saw you run. You chose truth over appearance." That made her laugh through tears. "You think love is a lie?" "I think most people love the idea, not the person." Something in his words broke her last wall. She stood up, his shirt falling to her knees. "I don't want to think tonight. I don't want to be the jilted bride. I just want to feel like a woman again." He stood slowly. He gave her every chance to step back. "Ella, if you stay, I won't be able to let you go." "Then don't." That night, one moment of weakness became one night of passion. It was the first time in years Ella felt alive and desired. The next morning, she woke up alone. On the pillow was a note: Thank you for last night. You are stronger than you think. - A And a black card with his number. Panic flooded her. She threw the card away in the lobby trash can and promised herself she would never see him again. Four weeks later, in her tiny apartment above a laundromat, the pregnancy test showed two pink lines. Her hand shook. Her whole world stopped. She was pregnant. With a stranger's baby. With a billionaire's secret baby. And she had no way to find him. She stared at the test for a long time. A baby from a one-night stand with a man whose full name she barely knew. She searched Alexander Blackwood. The name was everywhere. Blackwood Enterprises, Blackwood Hotels, Blackwood Tower. He was the richest man in the state. Famous for being cold and never dating the same woman twice. The Ice King. He would think she was trapping him for money. She put her hands on her flat stomach. "It's just you and me now." She got a job at Rosie's diner downtown. Her feet hurt. Her morning sickness was terrible. But she kept the baby secret. From her mother, from everyone. She went to her first ultrasound alone. Then she heard it. A fast, strong heartbeat. She saw a flicker on the screen and cried with happiness. She taped that picture to her fridge. What she didn't know was that Alexander had been looking for her too. He kept the security footage from the bar. He hired a private investigator. Find the girl in the white dress. Five months later, Ella was showing. Her uniform was tight. Whispers started. One rainy Tuesday, the bell above the diner door rang. "Welcome, take any seat," she said without looking up. "Still running away, Ella?" Her blood froze. She knew that voice. She looked up. Alexander Blackwood. In his black suit, soaking wet, staring at her belly. His grey eyes went from cold to shocked. "You," she whispered. "I've been searching for five months. You threw away my card." "I didn't want your money." "I know." His voice broke. "Is it mine?" Tears came. "Yes. I didn't know how to find you." Silence. Then Alexander knelt down in the middle of the cheap diner, his expensive suit on the dirty floor, and put his hand gently on her pregnant belly. His eyes were wet. "Then you're not alone anymore. Neither of you. Ever again. You are mine now. Both of you. And I take care of what's mine." For the first time in six months, Ella didn't feel alone. She felt found. But her nightmare wasn't over. That same night, Mark found out where she worked. He came to the diner drunk, shouting that she had embarrassed him. And Sarah came with him, now wearing Ella's old engagement ring. Alexander was still there when they arrived. And when Mark grabbed Ella's arm, Alexander stood up. Slowly. Dangerously. And Ella realized the billionaire stranger who had been so gentle with her could be terrifying when someone touched what was his.
