Reveling in her bad behavior, Nora settled back into her chair and pulled the Portland newspaper closer to reread Scott Barrow’s story. Channing’s pregnancy announcement and Winnie’s reaction had interrupted a thought sparked by the article. She let Scott’s crisp prose reorder her mind. Maybe that lost brain wave would ripple through it again. From beyond the wide-open window, she heard the roar of a lawnmower. A warm June breeze stroked her bare arms and legs, carrying with it the scent of new-cut grass. The homey smell made her think of Kent and his snug log house. She liked being in it with him.
