HUMAN OR ANIMAL?A chaotic patchwork of clouds hid what little moon occasionally slipped through. No light, not even pinpricks of life from some distant hamlet, broke the dark horizon. Not until that moment did Pablo realize how isolated they were. He whispered he’d head toward the west. Stuart stepped off in the opposite direction toward the gravel drive and the lake beyond.
The estate, Pablo saw as he felt his way across the wet grassland, was more immense than he thought. Somewhere an owl hooted, but the darkness disoriented him, and he couldn't tell from where the call came.
