As a surprise, Bill had taken her out for a steak dinner at Murray’s, then to a movie downtown, and he’d even reserved a room at the Sheraton Ritz. Unfortunately, she would rather have stayed home and ordered a pizza and shared a bottle of Chianti and maybe watched an old movie on late-night TV. Bill was simply never in tune with her feelings. She was stuck with a guy who treated her in a dutiful way as though she were a load of laundry to be folded or a lawn that needed mowing from time to time. She knew he could be a better husband than that. He’d allowed himself to get close to her when she’d been pregnant two years ago.
