*** Dana changed into jeans, a turtleneck, her warmest sweatshirt, and knee socks. Then she bundled up in a coat and scarf and boots and walked around the corner to Meyer’s Market, where she purchased a five-pound bag of Kitty Litter, a dishpan, and some cheap canned cat food. Once home out of the cold, she put the dishpan on the floor in the bathroom and poured some Kitty Litter into it. She set the cat food on the kitchen counter and lit the burner under the teakettle. Then she set out a plate of cookies on the coffee table in the living room and went to the bookshelf to pick out a book to read. She was glad she’d kept all her books from her New York phase, just after high school, when she’d lived in that wonderful city and spent hours every day in coffeehouses in Greenwich Village lis
