As fast as lightning, that feeling of relief turned to fear. If Rose was in that dark room, soon Paul's magic would absorb her like everyone else. That realization made Paul scream when he saw Rose running closer, "Don't come near!"
Rose stared at the confused boy.

But instead of staying away, Mawar instead covered both of Paul's cheeks with her hands. Her gaze was serious. "Paul, listen to me," he said. "Make a soul covenant with me."

By the laws of nature, a sorcerer could only absorb magic as much as the capacity in the sorcerer's body. From a glance, Rose could already see that Paul's magic would test the limits of her magic capacity. She must absorb beyond her own abilities.
