EPISODE 4:A CALM THAT LIES

1664 Words
Morning came gently at the Dante residence. Sunlight filtered through the tall windows, resting softly on polished floors and expensive furniture. Everything looked… untouched. Peaceful. Like the house itself had decided to forget what happened the night before. Downstairs, the faint clinking of cutlery echoed from the dining room. “Emily?” Lady Dante’s voice called out, warm and composed. “Breakfast is getting cold.” Upstairs, Emily stood still in front of her mirror. For a moment, she just stared at her reflection. No tears. No cracks. Just calm. As if nothing had happened. But her eyes… her eyes held something new. Something quiet. Something watching. Then, slowly she smiled. Not because she felt like it. But because she had learned she needed to. “Coming, Mum,” she replied softly. The word rolled off her tongue naturally. Perfectly placed. No hesitation. No suspicion. She walked into the dining room moments later, dressed neatly for school, her posture relaxed, her expression light. Lady Dante looked up and smiled. “There she is. You look better this morning.” “I feel better,” Emily said, taking her seat. She reached for her tea like she had done a thousand times before, her movements effortless, controlled. If there was anything broken inside her, it didn’t show. And that was the point. “Eat well,” her mother continued. “You’ve been a bit distant lately.” Emily paused for just a second barely noticeable. Then she smiled again. “I’m fine, Mum. Just school stress.” Lady Dante nodded, accepting it easily. Too easily. Minutes later, Emily stepped out of the house, the morning air brushing gently against her skin. The world outside hadn’t changed either. Cars moved. People talked. Life continued. Funny how everything keeps going… even after something inside you stops. At school, the noise was louder. Students laughing. Conversations overlapping. Normal life in full motion. And then “Emily.” She didn’t need to turn to know it was him. Jason. He caught up to her quickly, slightly out of breath, his eyes searching her face like he was trying to find something… anything that still looked like her. “You didn’t reply my messages last night,” he said, lowering his voice. “I was worried.” Emily adjusted her bag on her shoulder casually. “I slept early.” Another lie. Smooth. Jason frowned. “Emily…” She finally looked at him. And for a second, just a second he saw it. Not sadness. Not anger. Something colder. “You need to take a step back,” Jason said carefully. “Whatever you’re thinking of doing… this isn’t you.” A small, almost amused smile touched her lips. “People change, Jason.” “Not like this.” Her gaze held his. Steady. Unshaken. “Maybe you just didn’t know me as well as you thought.” That hit him. He stepped closer, his voice softer now. “I know you enough to know this path won’t end well.” Emily leaned in slightly, her voice just above a whisper. “Maybe I’m not trying to end well.” Jason froze. Because in that moment… he realized something terrifying. Emily wasn’t reacting anymore. She was deciding. She pulled back, her expression returning to something lighter, almost normal. “I have class,” she said simply. And just like that, she walked past him. Leaving Jason standing there with a feeling he couldn’t shake That the girl he was trying to save… Jason didn’t move immediately after she walked away. The hallway buzzed with noise, lockers slamming, people laughing, footsteps rushing past but all of it felt distant. Because Emily had never spoken to him like that before. Not cold. Not detached. Not… decided. He ran a hand through his hair, exhaling sharply before turning and going after her. Emily was already seated in class when he entered. Of course she was. Composed. Prepared. Like nothing had happened. Like she hadn’t just shaken something inside him. Jason slid into the seat beside her, his eyes lingering on her longer than usual. She didn’t look at him. Instead, she flipped open her notebook, her pen moving across the page with quiet focus. “Are you going to ignore me now?” he asked under his breath. “I’m in class,” she replied simply. No attitude. No emotion. Just distance. Jason leaned closer. “Emily, whatever you think you’re about to do” “I’m not doing anything,” she cut in softly. That made him pause. Not because of the words. But because of how easily they came out. Too smooth. Too controlled. “You’ve been off since yesterday,” he pressed. “And don’t tell me it’s nothing because I know you.” That finally got her attention. She turned her head slowly, meeting his gaze. And for a brief moment… there it was again. That unfamiliar stillness. “Jason,” she said quietly, “you think you know me.” The correction was subtle. But it landed heavily. Before he could respond, the teacher walked in, cutting the moment short. “Take your seats, everyone.” The class settled, but the tension between them didn’t. Not even close. Halfway through the lesson, Jason noticed something. Emily wasn’t just writing notes. She was writing something else. Her hand moved differently, slower, more deliberate. Careful. Like every word mattered. When the bell rang, students began packing up quickly. Emily closed her notebook without hesitation. Too quickly. Jason’s eyes narrowed. “Let me see that,” he said, reaching for it. But she pulled it back instantly. A small reaction. But enough. “Why?” she asked calmly. “What are you hiding?” “Nothing.” “You’ve never hidden things from me.” There it was. The truth sitting between them. Emily held his gaze for a second longer than necessary. Then she stood up. “Maybe that’s the problem.” And just like that, she walked out again. This time, Jason didn’t follow immediately. Because something clicked. Not fully. But enough to unsettle him. Emily wasn’t just hurting. She was preparing. And whatever it was… She had already started. Outside, Emily finally slowed her steps once she was alone. Her expression dropped, just slightly. Not weakness. Just… release. She opened her notebook again. Flipping past the normal notes… Until she got to the page. Names. Dates. A pattern forming. At the top, written neatly, almost beautifully: ADRIAN COLE Her fingers brushed over the name lightly. Her lips curved into that same quiet smile. “Not yet,” she whispered to herself. “Soon.” Behind her, unseen Jason stepped into the hallway corner, watching from a distance. He didn’t see the page clearly. But he saw enough. The secrecy. The intent. The shift. And for the first time… Jason felt it. Not just worry. Not just confusion. But fear. Because whatever Emily was planning… It wasn’t small. Emily Jason stepped forward this time, closing the distance between them before she could walk away again. “Emily” His voice was firmer now. Not just concern. Determination. “You’re not telling me something. And I need to know what it is.” Emily didn’t respond immediately. She just looked at him. Calm. Measuring. Like she was deciding how much of herself he was still allowed to see. “Since when do you need to know everything about me?” she asked quietly. “That’s not what this is” “Then what is it?” Her tone wasn’t loud. But it pressed. Jason exhaled, running a hand through his hair again. “This is me trying to stop you from doing something you’ll regret.” A pause. A small one. But it was there. Emily’s eyes flickered for just a second. Regret. The word sat between them like something fragile. Something dangerous. “You’re assuming I haven’t already thought about that,” she said. Jason’s jaw tightened. “Then think about it again.” “I have.” “Emily” “Emmy!” The voice cut through sharply, bright and familiar. Both of them turned. Maya walked toward them, her energy completely different from the tension standing between them. Light. Unaware. “Why do you both look like you’re about to start a war in the hallway?” she laughed, stopping beside Emily. Her eyes moved between them, curiosity flickering in. “Did I miss something?” Emily didn’t hesitate. She smiled. That same easy, believable smile. “Nothing serious,” she said. “Jason just likes overthinking things.” Maya raised a brow. “As usual.” Jason didn’t smile. Didn’t move. He just kept looking at Emily. Because now… He knew. Maya nudged Emily lightly. “Come on, we’re going to be late for the next class.” Emily nodded, adjusting her bag. “Yeah, let’s go.” But just before she turned Jason spoke again. Softer this time. Almost a warning. “Whatever you’re planning…” Emily paused. “…you don’t have to do it alone.” That did something. Not visible. Not obvious. But something. Emily glanced back at him. And for the first time since morning… Her expression shifted. Just slightly. “I know,” she said. And for a split second That sounded like the old her. Then it was gone. She turned, walking off with Maya, their voices blending into normal conversation as they disappeared down the hallway. “…so tell me why you were both looking so intense?” Maya whispered dramatically. Emily let out a small laugh. “You’re too observant.” “Obviously. Now talk. Jason stayed where he was. Watching. Thinking. Piecing things together that didn’t quite fit yet. Because Maya might have walked in at the right time… But Jason knew one thing for sure now Emily wasn’t just hiding what she wrote She was protecting it And whatever it was… It mattered enough for her to push him away.
