Killian remained with her until he knew she'd released fully to sleep. He watched her rise and fall with each breath, the creases of fatigue etched on her face. How her fingers grasped the blanket, clutching onto something abstract, stirred something unexplainable inside of him. But he suppressed it, locked behind the churn inside of him.
The healer lingered slightly longer, watching Killian and the other man who had accompanied Serena. Then, with a look that seemed to say she knew something she wasn't telling, she smiled and left the room. Silence fell, heavy and expectant.
Serena's friend the one who had been openly disobedient since they arrived broke at last. "She will sleep for hours now. Her dreams will be peaceful with the herbs I gave her." His tone was curt, protecting.
