Chapter 5 First Ally

1765 Words
Laura's POV I've always been a timid girl. I feared ghosts. I feared uncanny events. I dared not to read suspense and thrillers alone on a dark night. Even a rat running in the shadow could make me scream. Not to mention a death threat. Yet I never expected that someday I would get used to death. To be honest, it wasn't as bad as I had imagined. It was true that my body ached while losing my breath, yet when my heart stopped beating, my vision went black, and my pain was gone. With a sigh, I look at Arthur and say, "You can't use death to threaten someone who isn't afraid of death." Arthur arches his eyebrows and sneers disdainfully, "Are you trying to say you are fearless?" "Well, if you don't believe me. You can kill me." I shrug. Instead of using the dagger to end my life, Arthur holds it in place and observes my face. He leans closer and gives me a cruel smile, "I won't let you die before you tell me who you are. That will be too soft for a spy, don't you think?" He says as he drops his dagger. My eyes widen in terror. The sharp object is about to land and cut my thigh when Arthur catches it. The incident makes me shiver, and a triumphant smile plays on his lips, "It seems to me you are not as brave as you claim yourself to be." "I am not afraid of death." I glare at him, defending myself, "I am afraid of pain. That's all." "And you assume death is painless?" Arthur says sarcastically. He does have a point, and I am speechless. "I am running out of patience," Arthur announces as he lifts his dagger, and swings his gaze to my face, "On three, if you haven't told me the truth, I will kill you. And trust me, I will make it super slow so you can be in great pain." "Per-vert," I murmur. "What did you say?" "I said perfect." I clear my throat and fake a smile, "I am ready to confess." "Good." Arthur nods, "Go ahead, tell me, who are you?" Although Lily has told me not to tell Arthur the truth, he leaves me no choice. So I start, "I am Laura, Laura Hinks. I am 18. I am a writer who enjoys writing werewolf novels. I created your world, and you're a character of mine." Arthur raises his eyebrows at me. "Believe it or not, it is true." I sigh, "I planned to publish my book and send some copies as gifts to my friend at my birthday party, but I met a writing block and failed to finish it according to the deadline I set for myself." I thought Arthur would interrupt me or tell me to shut up, yet it turns out that he is paying attention to what I say. I feel touched that he willingly hears me, so I continue, "I was quite disappointed in myself, especially when people started asking me about my book. My friends told me it was okay to delay and that they had the patience to wait, but I couldn't. I couldn't do that when my enemies called my book a pathetic fetus and advised me to take an abortion." "They are horrible people." Lily bounces in my head, growling in fury. "People who say those words to you are disgusting." Arthur frowns and adds, "I feel sorry for you. I truly do. But your suffering cannot justify your behaviors——" He doesn't get to finish his sentence as I cut him off, "Oh come on, I am not seeking sympathy. You asked me to tell you the truth, and that's what I offered. Like I said, I am Laura, not Agnes Garcia. I don't need pity or assistance from creatures who can only think with their dicks." Arthur is amused. There is an unnoticeable smile tugged on his lips, but he masks it quickly and puts on a solemn face, "I have a reason to believe you're talking about male wolves." "Don't be so ego-centered, dude." I wave my hand, "Besides werewolves, there are other creatures out there. So to be specific, I am talking about all kinds of creatures who can only think with their d***s. I don't find them a reliable alliance. That's why I won't seek help from them." "Why?" Arthur lowers his gaze, scanning my legs, my waist, my neck, and eventually his eyes focus on my face, "You are ugly, and you cannot make use of your appearance as a weapon like Agnes?" Feeling offended, I give him a smack on the arm, totally forgetting the situation that he is still holding a sharp object. "How can you be so rude!" I shout in disbelief, "I bestow you with good virtues. Chivalrism! You're supposed to be a charming character, brave, loyal, and polite to ladies!" "Well, maybe you're not a lady." Arthur smirks as he grabs my wrist, pulling me towards him, "And there is no need to be polite to the likes of you." "What do you mean by saying the likes of me?" I stumble a bit and eventually retrieve balance. I send him a glare and demand, "Let go of me." "Nope." He denies my request, "Not until you finish your story. What you said didn't make any sense, yet it intrigued me. So please continue. Tell me what happened and then I might decide if I would let you go." I squint my eyes, determining that I need to do something to make him understand who is in charge. "I am too nervous to talk when a handsome man is holding my hand." I whine, "Free me now, or I won't be able to take my eyes off you." Arthur shivers and loosens the grab as if he were stung by a catfish. I burst out laughing and confront his glare, "I've told you I am an author. Your world is created by me. So I play God in this world. I know every character's strengths and weaknesses. Your decency and integrity cause you blush whenever women tease or flirt with you." "Nonesense." Arthur rolls his eyes. And he blushes. I smirk. "Stop staring." He says through gritted teeth, "Keep talking." "Sorry, where was I?" "Your writing block." "Right." I nod and continue, "I met writing block and tried to change the situation as I hate people calling it an unborn fetus. I worked hard to find a proper ending for this story, yet I couldn't figure out a reasonable closure. Yesterday was my birthday and I locked myself in my study, struggling with the ending till I couldn't keep my eyes open. I fell asleep and when I woke up again, somehow I was trapped in Agnes Garcia's body, and the first thing I received was a f*****g proposal from Alpha Leon. I was panic, so I said no I wouldn't mate with him." "That's very interesting," Arthur replies in amusement. "You wouldn't say so if such a thing happened to you!" I rub my face, "Can you imagine how embarrassing the scene was?" "I can imagine how embarrassed you were," Arthur smirks. "Yeah, sure you can." I shoot him a glare. "What happened next?" "After I said no, there was an uproar in the pack. They couldn't understand why I would refuse Alpha Leon's proposal. I thought I owed them an explanation, so I told them who I was and how evil Agnes was, which is why this bonding should be stopped before everything is too late. I listed a lot of crimes Agnes committed, like k********g Luke, making a deal with a witch, drugging Alpha Leon, faking pregnancy, banishing Judy Green, balabla——" I pause to catch my breath and go on, "Then Alpha Leon was outraged. He ordered his Beta to kill me and sent my corpse to the witch's hut to exchange Luke. I don't know if they truly did that because I was already dead then." "Dead?" "Yeah. John took the order and snapped my neck." I shudder at the memory, hands to my throat instinctively. "So you're a ghost now?" Arthur examines my face carefully, "Is this why you're not scared of death? Because you're dead." "No! I WAS dead. I AM alive." I sigh, "I had thought that death would end this ridiculous adventure and send me back to my world, but it turned out that death was merely the beginning. I died and I woke up, still trapped in Agnes' body. You know what, this wasn't the first time I woke up in this bloody chamber. Last time I made a cord out of the bed canopy and tried to escape from the window—" "Why didn't you simply walk through that door?" Arthur interrupts me, eyes filled with confusion. "Guess what, Alpha Leon sent you to fetch me, and you happened to be the one who blocked the goddamn door." "Oh." Arthur blinks and mutters, "Sorry. I remembered none of this." "Never mind. I was about to jump when you broke in. You thought I was going to commit suicide, so you tried to talk me out of this. I negotiated with you, asking you to fulfill my three wishes, and you agreed." "I agreed?" Arthur asks in surprise. "Yes. But don't worry, I won't ask you to pay his debt. That Arthur was already dead." I say as a surge of sorrow hit me. I recollect myself and say, "I was trying to get off the window but somehow stumbled and fell. Then you, or rather, that Arthur, jumped to save me. I survived, yet he died. I couldn't let him die on me, so I used his dagger to kill myself." "Commit suicide for love?"Arthur proposes. I give him a weird look and tell him,"For a new start." He lets out a sigh of relief and murmurs, "That's how you know I use a dagger." "Exactly." I nod, "I've told you everything. Now could you show me the way to the red tower? I really need to go to the library and grab a pen to change the development of the story. I'd love to give all of you a happy ending." "Including Agnes Garcia?" Arthur snorts in disdain. "What other choices do I have? I am trapped in her body." I laugh bitterly, "Show me the way, will you?" Arthur contemplates for a while and heads to the door, "Follow me."
