Laura’s POV
I gather all my strength to pull down the canopy. It falls, and the dirt attached to the veil causes me to sneeze.
“You alright, Garcia?”Arthur calls out from the outside.
“Yes, I am fine! I am changing clothes.”I assure him while quickening my pace to tear apart the canopy.
After making them into long, narrow strips, I knot them together at one end to secure them and then braid them together tightly.
“Where did you learn this?”Lily asks in amazement.
“Growing fond of me now?”I tease her and reply, “I learned the trick from Jack.”
“Who is Jack?”
“A guy from the teacher’s enemies group. He is an expert in escaping classes.”
“So you’re a teacher’s enemy, too?”Lily asks with enthusiasm.
“No.”
“You’re teacher’s friend then?”Lily asks again, sounding disappointed this time.
I smirk,“We don’t call them that. We call them teachers’ pets. And I am not a member of them, either. I’d rather stay neutral. I don’t want to cause any trouble, nor do I have a grand wish to accomplish. All I want is to survive high school and get admitted by a college.”
“You couldn’t be less ambitious.”Lily sneers.
“Well, after three teenagers commit suicide in my school due to stress, I decided to make peace with myself and believe being ordinary is not a big issue.”I shrug casually.
“Garcia, have you finished?”Arthur shouts.
I snap out of my thought, walking off to the window while shouting,“Not yet!”.
“Why does he keep calling me Garcia rather than Agnes?”I ask Lily.
“Because he loathes you.”
I grimace and reach to the fastener of the window, “I will make him a more forgiving character once I grab my pen.”
“I agree.”Lily giggles.
As I lay my finger on the window, it makes a squeeze that is too noisy to be ignored.
“Garcia, what on earth are you doing inside?”
“I am changing clothes. I already told you!”I l lie and eventually get the window opened.
I throw one end of the cord out of the window and tie the other end to the foot of the bed. Then I climb to the edge of the window and adjust myself to an appropriate position. However, when I finally find a proper way, the door flings open, and Arthur breaks in.
“Can’t you be fas—” Shocked at what he sees, he doesn’t get to finish the sentence. He gazes in my direction, eyes widening in horror.
“Oh shit.”Lily shouts, “Jump! Laura, Jump!”
“Garcia,” Arthur steps forward, but his body comes to a sudden halt when he notices that I didn’t listen to him. He must be worried that his approach will provoke me. He ultimately decides to remain unmoved and talks to me feet away. He raises his hand in the air and offers, “I won’t get any closer. Could you calm down and get off there first? We can have a talk.”
“Don’t believe him.”Lily talks in my head, “Once you’re back, he may bring you to the Alpha and you will be doomed.”
“Garcia,” Arthur softens his voice and offers, “Whatever troubles you have, tell me so we can fix it together.”
“Gosh, he sounds like a siren. I think his proposal is good. If I can explain what happens to me, we could solve this issue more easily.”I murmur to my wolf, “Are you sure he will betray us?”
“Umm, I’m not sure. Arthur is a good person yet I don’t know what he will prioritize when he has to choose between keeping his promise and being loyal to his Alpha.”
“Okay. I will make a negotiation with him, to see if he can really help us.”I inform Lily of my decision and turn to Arthur, “Alright. I trust you, and I hope you won’t fail my trust.”
“I won’t.”He answers with a stern look.
“Before I get off, I want you to promise me three things, or I’d rather jump,”I tell him.
“What do you want?”
“First, you have to believe me. What I am going to tell you is an unbelievable truth. I bid you to discard your prejudice against me and trust me.”
“That’s difficult.”Arthur frowns his eyebrows and sighs, “But I will try. What else do you want?”
“Second, I need you to help me get to the library before the ceremony.”
The place must ring a bell to Arthur. His face darkens, and he asks through gritted teeth, “Why are you going there?”
“That’s none of your business.”I answer calmly, “Get me there, and you will be free to go.”
“Fine. What’s your third wish?”
“I haven’t made up my mind. Let’s save it for later, shall we?”I grin at him.
“I can’t give you my promise when I don’t know what you’ll ask for.”He sends me a suspicious look as if I would invite him to rob a bank or something.
Even though I am amazed at how alert he is, I can’t help but roll my eyes. “I won’t ask you to do immoral things.”
“And you think I will believe that?”Arthur snorts.
“Did you already forget my first demand? I asked you to trust me, and you promised you would give it a try.”
“Being alert is my second nature.”He retorts in frustration, “It isn’t easy to trust a woman like you.”
Feeling offended, I snap,“Well, you should try harder.”
“You’re the most obnoxious woman I’ve ever seen in my entire life.”
“And you’re an arrogant asshole ranking second place on this planet!”I sneer, arms across my chest.
Arthur sends me a murderous look, yet his curiosity drives him to ask,“Who wins the first prize anyway?”
I didn’t expect such a question from him. I smirk, “Alpha Leon.”
There is a slight smile tugged at his lips but he quickly conceals it. He clears his throat and demands, “Now get off and tell me your story. I will accompany you to the library.”
“Okay.”I nod. I am about to get off the edge when I trip over the cord and lose my balance. Fear seizes my heart as I stumble and fall out of the window.
“Agnes!”Arthur shouts and leaps forward to grab my hand.
It is so close, but he misses the catch.
Lily is shrieking and it isn’t long before my world goes black.
When I open my eyes again, I feel so painful. I must break my backbone and legs as I cannot move. I am astounded at the fact that I should still breathe after falling from so high a place. I blink and then realize I didn’t land directly on the ground. There is something soft beneath me. I glance down and see Arthur whose body is covered with blood.
“He saves us,”Lily mutters in disbelief.
“Why did you do this? You hate me.”I whisper.
“The Alpha chose you to be the Luna of our pack.”He replies in a raspy voice, “It is my duty to keep you safe.”
“You’re so stupid,”I mutter as tears start to blur my sight.
“Are those crocodile tears, or are you genuinely worried about me?”He teases, and his breath becomes shallower with every passing second.
“Crocodile tears. I give a dame about you. You’re nothing but a side character.”I say as I cry harder.
He gives me a confused look as he lifts his hand, trying to wipe off the tear on my cheek, but his hand drops in the middle, and his heart stops beating.
“What are we going to do now?”Lily asks in a panic, “Arthur is dead. Other wolves are going to find us. And you can barely move!”
“I think there is only one choice left,” I say as I reach for Arthur’s belt. It is made of fine leather and has a sturdy sheath to hold the dagger securely in place.
I pull the weapon out and stare at it. The dagger has a pointed blade with intricate engravings and etched designs along the edge. The blade is made of high-quality steel that is polished to a mirror finish with a slight curve. I hold the wooden hilt and turn the pointed end to my heart.
Taking a deep breath, I stab it.
