Chapter Four: Exile And Survival

708 Words
The forest Stretched endless beneath the fading blood moon. Lyra's claws flexed as she glanced back. No pack followed, but she felt their eyes on her still. "We're exiles," she whispered, her voice raw. Darius's gaze was steady. "We're free." Her chest ached. "Free? Our packs will hunt us. We're prey now." He brushed her hand. "Then let them hunt. We'll survive." By dawn, exhaustion gnawed at them. Lyra collapsed against a fallen log, her breath ragged. "We need food," she muttered. "Water. Shelter." Darius crouched beside her. "There's a stream nearby. I'll find it." She glared. "You think you can protect me out here?" His lips curved faintly. "I don't think. I know." They found the stream at dusk, it's water silver under the moonlight. Lyra knelt, drinking deeply. Darius watched her. ".You're strong. Fierce. But you can't do this alone." She lifted her gaze. "And you can?" His voice was low. "Not without you." They bulit a crude shelter of branches and leaves. Lyra's claws scraped bark, her wolf restless. "This won't last," she muttered. Darius steadied the frame. "It doesn't have to. Just tonight." The fire crackled, it's glow flickering against their faces. Lyra sat across from him. "You realize," she said, "we've chosen death. Exile is death." Darius leaned forward, eyes burning, "No. We've chosen life. Our life. Together." Darius winced, blood seeping from a cut on his arm. Lyra's eyes narrowed. "You're hurt." "It's nothing," he muttered. She pressed cloth against the wound. "You're reckless." He smirked. "And you care." A distant howl split the night-Silverclaw. Lyra's cheat tightened. "They're hunting us." Darius rose claws gleaming. "Then let them come." The fire burned low. Lyra shivered, her wolf restless. Darius shifted closer, his warmth brushing hers. "Stay near,"he murmured. She stiffened. "I don't need you." His arm brushed her shoulder. "But you want me." Silence stretched, heavy and changed. The fire crackled, the bond pulsed. Lyra's heart thundered. Their lips hovered a breath apart, Lyra trembled, torn between pride and desire. She jerked back "Not yet." Darius's smirk softened. "Then i'll wait." The next day, hunters struck. Silver arrows hissed through the trees. Lyra snarled, dragging Darius into cover. "They're close," she hissed. Darius's claws flashed. "Then we fight." They ambushed a lone hunter, claws flashing, teeth tearing. Lyra's wolf surged, feral an unstoppable. When it was over, Darius's eyes burned. "You're magnificent." After the chase, they collapsed in the shelter, breathless, bloodied. Lyra's wolf surged, clawing at her chest. "You'll die for me," she whispered. Darius's voice was steady. "I'll live for you." Lyra drifted into uneasy sleep. She dreamed of her father's eyes, cold and merciless, and of Darius's hand, warm against her. She woke with a gasp, his arm around her. "Bad dreams?" he murmured her claws flexed. "Always." The fire burned low. Lyra's voice trembled. "I hate you. i hate what you've done to me." Darius's gaze was steady. "And yet you're here." her chest ached. "I should kill you." He leaned closer. "Then why don't you?" Her claws flexed. "Because i can't." Silence stretched, the fire crackling, the bond pulsing. Finally, Lyra whispered, "Then we fight. Together. " Darius's voice was steady. "Always." Back in Silverclaw camp, the scout who had seen them stirred. His voice was hoarse. "she fights with him. She betrayed us." The council erupted. Some demanded her death. Others whisperedof fate. In Blackfang camp, a young warrior named Kael spoke. "If Darius betrays us, i'll hunt him myself." The elders murmured. "Or perhaps fate binds him. Prehaps we should watch." Lyra and Darius stumbled into a trap-nets strung with silver. Lyra snarled, claws flashing. Darius tore through the bindings, his wolf surging."Run!" They fled breathless, hearts pounding. A lone rouge wolf appeared, slashing through the hunters. Lyra froze. "Why help us?" The rouge's eyes gleamed. "Because your bond changes everthing. The packs must fall." The forest was quiet, the blood moon fading. Lyra and Darius stood side by side, their breaths ragged, their hearts pounding. "We're exiles, " she whispered "We're leaders," he said softly. Her claws flexed."Our packs will hunt us." "Let them," he murmured. "Ww have each other. And now we have allies." Their wolves howled, voices rising together, defiant and unbroken.
