Chapter Two.
Maisey hit the brakes and pulled the car to a stop in the front yard of her house. Then she leaped out of the car allowing the cool wind to blow against her face. She noticed her friend, Jackie’s car in the compound. She couldn’t help but smile when she saw it. At least, now she would have someone to talk to other than Adam. She walked up the stairs and into the house. As she entered she noticed the house looked untidy, unlike how she had left it before going out. The pillows and cushions littered the floor, as Maisey began to pick them up, She heard voices coming from upstairs. Her husband’s and Jackie’s.
‘What were they planning?’ She thought to herself as she placed the last pillow on the chair. She went upstairs taking deliberately slow and silent steps so as not to let them know she was around.
Maisey was about to pull the doorknob when she heard Jackie’s cries. Her moans intertwined with Adam’s feral grunts.
“Oh my God Adam, faster.” She could almost see Jackie gritting her teeth as she spoke. Her heart clenched as she realized what was happening. She didn’t realize when the tears began to fall down her cheeks.
“Do you like it?” Adam’s voice came after.
“Of course I do. You’re always better than all the guys Maisey has ever introduced to me.” Jackie panted. Maisey opened the door slightly so she could get a view of both of them together.
“Did you ever sleep with any of them?” Adam asked in a strangely deep tone. As if he was pissed that Jackie was seeing other guys.
“Only one dear and you shouldn’t be worried about him. You’re the only guy I will ever fall in love with.” Jackie confessed to him.
Adam pulled her close and kissed her on the lips, the sight of them kissing disgusted Maisey. She couldn’t believe it. Her best friend and her husband cheating on her, if Adam had to cheat, should he have gone to Jackie?
“Are you sure about that?” Adam asked kneading her t**s while placing kisses all over her face.
“I have no interest in any other guy except you.” Jackie replied in a sultry voice. Maisey could believe that, Jackie had no interest in guys. None at all. Even when Maisey had spent most of her time singling out dates for her best friend, trying to make a match for her in every guy Jackie talked to, she had done that all in vain and Maisey had grown tired of helping her out in the end.
“So how do you explain Richard?” Adam teased.
“Seriously, are we going down that road?” Jackie purred.
“You have to know that you’re mine. Girl, no other guy has access to you.” Adam whispered, his lips brushing against her ears.
“Really, why isn’t it the same for me uh? Why don’t I have you all to myself?” Jackie asked him folding her arms across her chest. Adam shrugged.
“You have to share me with Maisey, it’s just how it is. I’m a guy for every woman.” Maisey wasn’t sure if he was boasting when he said that but he looked like he was.
Jackie returned his smile with one of her own and Maisey could have sworn that the both of them had run mad if she wasn’t also running mad in her own way. It seemed Jackie accepted her fate in his life as the ‘other’ woman but Maisey wouldn’t allow that. She wasn’t that kind of woman, she would never bend to any man’s wishes or share her own man with another woman.
She opened the door widely when she could take it no more, her eyes smoldering with rage as she entered the room.
Jackie and Adam both disengaged themselves from each other’s hands when they saw her.
“How long has this been going on?” Nothing else mattered asides the answer to that question. She really wanted to know how long she had been fooled. How long her husband had been screwing her friend behind her back without her knowing.
“It’s not what you think sweetie.” Adam began as he crawled off the bed and began to walk towards Maisey.
Maisey rolled her eyes at him, it always started with those words ‘it’s not what you think.’ Now Maisey had to ask herself what she was thinking to see if he was actually right. She took a step backwards and instinctively threw her shoe at Adam.
“Shut up you wretched bastard.” She yelled at the top of her lungs forgetting her health situation. “How long have you been screwing my Jackie? Just answer the d**n question.” Maisey screamed. She began to heave rapidly as she struggled to breath. S**t, this man would make her lose her mind.
“I’m sorry, Maisey. Here have a bottle of water.” Adam brought out a water bottle which he had conjured out of nowhere and held it out for her. Maisey kicked the bottle out of his hands harshly.
“Stay away from me.” She ordered, a fake smile plastered across her face as she turned towards Jackie.
“You.” She said in an accusatory tone. “I thought you were my best friend.” She queried. “What happened to us?”
“I am your best friend, Maisey I’m still your best friend but…” A slap pierced Jackie’s face the instant she began talking. She held her cheeks in pain and fell to the floor.
Adam pushed Maisey out of the way just so he could get to Jackie.
He held her close to him as he asked.
“What is wrong with you Maisey? You just hurt her.” He chided her while Maisey stared at him in bewilderment, was this her husband?
“I hurt her?” She asked taking slow steps towards them. “I hurt her but you two don’t know how painful it is for me to find my husband in bed with my best friend, do you?” She questioned.
“I can explain, Maisey.” Adam pleaded using the same phrase she hated most.
“Explain what?” Maisey asked incredulously. “What excuse do you have for what you just did uh?, tell me because I don’t know what kind of narrative you’re going to spin off. At the moment, I don’t understand you anymore.
“I swear Maisey, I’m sorry but…”
“But what?” She interrupted him.
“Jackie and I are in love… with each other.” Maisey thought she had heard the world’s biggest joke when he said this. She burst out laughing clutching her chest at the same time as the act led her into another round of coughing. She panted slowly as the rounds came to an end, then she lifted her head.
“I don’t understand you Adam, please explain. What happened to me?, what happened to us?, you mean you don’t love me anymore?” Maisey asked unbelievably.
“I do but…”
“You love Jackie more.” Maisey chipped in. “Isn’t that it? You love her and now you hate me?, isn’t it?”
“Hate isn’t the word here Maisey.” Adam corrected her.
“So what is it? You dislike me?”
“No, I love you okay, the thing is I love you both. I love you and Jackie the same,I don’t know sweetie but we can all live together. I swear our life would still be the same.” Adam explained.
Maisey went utterly speechless. This was probably a scene from a movie, she had to get her act together.
Two heartbreaks in a day was such a devastating experience. Was her mind playing jokes on her? Was there something she had to do to snap out of this mess?
“He is right Maisey we didn’t mean for you to find out like this but we’re in love.” Jackie whispered.
Maisey only stared at them, she couldn’t shout or yell, that would only make her health worse. She only headed to the wardrobe and began to pack up her clothing, she had reasoned and the only thing she could think about doing was to get out of their wretched lives and she would do exactly that. She didn’t want to share her man especially not with her best friend.
“Maisey, what are you doing?” Maisey didn’t give him a reply. She only kept packing. The prognosis said she had six months left to live, she might as well spend it alone knowing fully well that she allowed two lovers to spend their lives together.
Her husband and best friend? It still felt like a joke. A joke she could only cry over. Maisey zipped up the traveling box and wheeled it out of the room with Adam galloping behind her like a giraffe on roller skaters.
“Maisey, please wait.” He called out but she ignored him. She had no use for men like him. Men like him only saw women as preys to be fed upon and she couldn’t fall into that trap. Not now, not ever. She wondered why she had never seen Adam the way he was, maybe it was because of the way he had always treated her. All those sweet and soft words, they were all for nought. He ended up falling in love with another woman.
She entered her daughter’s room and began packing Lily’s clothes still not paying a single mind to Adam.
“Maisey please understand. We can live together, I promise. Jackie is your best friend and I love her too. Adam went on his knees as he pleaded with her.
Maisey only got more irritated with his attitude.
“I haven’t got the strength to argue this with you Adam. Would you please just let me go?”Maisey asked in a harsh whisper. She wasn’t asking anyway. She pushed him away immediately she said that
“I’m sorry Maisey. I am.” He pleaded.
“You’re sorry I caught you or you’re sorry you ever slept with her?” Maisey asked him but Adam felt silent.
He licked his lower lips and sighed. “I’m sorry for both.”
Maisey zipped up her baby’s box and turned to him. “Are you really sorry? I heard everything you said and you didn’t seem sorry while you were on it.” She pointed out. Adam was about to say something but Maisey interrupted him.
“It doesn’t matter anyway. I don’t care if you’re sorry or not. It just doesn’t fix this.” She told him.
Then she pulled the small traveling box down to the ground and wheeled it out.
“I’m sorry.” She whispered to him in a mocking tone as she left the room. “But I have to leave.”
Adam tightened his fists by his side as he watched her leave. What the hell was he going to do?
