Waking up in fear, Draken looked around.
Leiandros was still awake. Reading the book, propping his face with his hand, he looked like a beautiful statue, frozen but keeping the wisdom of the ages.
Draken did not hurry to get up. His eyes were wandering over his long hair that was gathered back, over his broad shoulders, along the lines of his body, along the curve of his legs. He was examining his long fingers which belonged to a great pianist.
Having carefully studied him from the side, Draken for the first time was able to see something so beautiful, someone so beautiful. And it was Leiandros.
Noticing his gaze on himself, Leiandros closed the book. There was a surprise on his face.
“How are you feeling yourself?”
“Good.”
“Can you get up?”
“I think yes.”
“We’ll have to go soon. Dragons are already asleep.”
“Leiandros, can I ask you something?”
Leiandros nodded his head.
Draken sat up and fixing his gaze on him, he whispered the question that Leiandros always wanted to hear. He asked him, “Would you like to change your life someday?”
Leiandros, the strong warrior, serious man, now, in front of this young man, looked like a fragile ice, like thin wings of the bird, like a weak wind that can’t swing the thinnest branch.
He made a sound that was both yes and no. But then came the words, “It is time for us to go. Take these stones.”
“Why didn’t we take a few candles?” Draken asked, stumbling over the stones. “Leiandros where are you?” Feeling Leiandros’ hand on his, he smiled but immediately removed that smile from his face.
“Dragons are very sensitive to light. Once you lit a candle, they will immediately feel it.”
“Do you know where to go?”
“I know.”
“And where are we going? Do you even see something?”
“You can see everything if you want.”
Holding his breath, Draken looked straight ahead. The hot air cooled a little bit. Now, it was pleasantly warm around.
Walking, he still could feel the slight pain in his leg.
Suddenly, Leiandros pulled Draken towards him. They were so close to each other that there wasn’t any space between their chests.
“What are you doing?”
“Hush,” Leiandros said and then it was audible that he split the stone and stretched out his hand forward. And then, Draken could hear the breathing of the dragon. But it was hard to tell where the creature was.
Draken, feeling Leiandros’ face close to him, couldn’t move or thing.
When Leiandros collected the breath into the stone, they continued their way.
“It is not that hard. I thought it would be more difficult.” Draken whispered.
“It will be less difficult if you remain silent.”
Walking in an absolute darkness, Draken touched Leiandros’ hand to convince himself that he didn’t get lost.
Trying to make less noise he took off his boots.
“Draken what are you doing?”
“You should take off your boots. Otherwise, we are making too much noise.”
Stepping quietly and slowly as possible, they were holding stones in their hands and every time they felt the hot air, they stopped and tried to hear the dragon’s breathing.
Unable to endure the darkness and silence anymore Draken asked, “These dragons, are they around us? Then why don’t we bump into them? Don’t they feel us?”
Leiandros answered in a subtle whisper, “As my grandfather said, if you want to stay unnoticed before the dragons, then you should keep walking to the right. The steps should be slow and small.”
“Why exactly to the right?”
“This is another mystery. I don’t know why.”
“Didn’t your grandfather explain why?”
“No. He left a lot of mysteries.”
“In your family, everyone is so mysterious,” Draken said, raising his voice. “So how many stones do we have?”
“One. We need to fill one stone.”
“It is good that Blaze didn’t tell us to fill fifty stones.”
“A little more and we will leave this place.”
Taking another step to the right, Draken felt the hot wind. Holding his breath, he was sure that the dragon was right in front of him.
A click, the stone broke into two halves, inhale, exhale, the hot steam filled everything around.
Another click and the stone closed, leaving light burns on Leiandros’ skin.
When it was time to go, Draken was unable to move. His heartbeat became audible as distinctly as if it were beating somewhere outside of his chest.
And at the very moment when eyes from the darkness pierced both of them, Draken took a step towards Leiandros and the bright, blinding fire finally destroyed the darkness.
Spreading their wings after sleep, several dragons with open mouth, breathed out the fire. And this very fire hung over Leiandros and Draken, who stood so close to each other.
Fire was playing in their dilated pupils, it was dancing on their surprised faces. The fire eclipsed the night, turning it into a hot stream of nonexistent day.
Looking intently into the fire that was burning in Leiandros’ eyes, Draken softly whispered, “I love you.”
After hearing this, Leiandros’ eyes became even brighter. And now it was not the fire of dragons that was playing in his large eyes, but the fire of his heart, which was extinguished a long time ago and now, was re – ignited.
That night, they miraculously left unnoticed. And only due to the fact that everything around, suddenly, ceased to exist for a meek moment.
There was no danger anymore. Only the flames of newly born, f*******n love.
