CHAPTER THREE Carly’s feet were bare, and the soles felt uncomfortably hot. She opened her eyes but was blinded by a bright glare all around her. A torrid wind seared her face. Using her hands to shield her eyes, she brought her environment into focus. She was surrounded by a vast expanse of sand. A beach? she wondered. For a moment Carly felt a surge of hope. She’d once had a vision of her sister Megan quite alive and walking on a beach. But that had been a beautiful, sparkling place. This sand glowed a flaming golden color under the merciless sun, and no water was anywhere in sight.
