CHAPTER NINE Carly felt a blast of heat from the flames, and the roar was almost deafening. Since Lyle was standing slightly in front of her, she reflexively reached out to pull him back from the blaze. She heard him let out a sharp exclamation. “Hey!” Then she looked up and saw his face. Lyle doesn’t see the flames at all, she realized. It was obvious that he didn’t even feel the sweltering heat that seemed to fill the room, even though her own nostrils stung from the hot air. And judging from their puzzled expressions, neither did Dr. Sinard or Captain Flannery. They looked alarmed, all right—but not at the flames. They were visibly startled by Carly’s sudden reaction.
