CHAPTER TWO

EYES IN THE DARK Ember's world went dark, and she felt herself being pulled backward. She tried to cry out, but her voice was frozen in her throat. When she came to, Ember was lying on the cabin floor, her head throbbing with pain. Augie was kneeling beside her, his face etched with worry. "Ember, oh my god, I'm so sorry," Augie whispered, his voice shaking. "I should have gotten you out of here sooner." Ember struggled to sit up, her mind foggy. "What...what happened?" she stammered. Augie helped her to her feet. "I don't know," he admitted. "One minute we were standing there, and the next...I don't know, it was like something just reached out and knocked you off your feet." Ember's eyes scanned the room, but everything seemed normal. The fire was still burning, the shadows cast by the flickering flames dancing across the walls. But then, she saw it. A piece of paper on the floor, near the window. Ember walked over to pick it up, her heart pounding in her chest. It was a note, scrawled in red ink. "Get out while you still can," it read. Ember's eyes met Augie's. "What does this mean?" she whispered. Augie's face was grim. "I think it means we're not alone in this town," he said. "And I think we should take this warning seriously." As they stood there, frozen in fear, Ember heard a strange noise outside. It was a low, rumbling growl, like thunder on a summer day. But it wasn't thunder. It was something much closer. As the growling noise grew louder, Ember's heart pounded in her chest. She felt a surge of adrenaline, her senses on high alert. Augie grabbed her arm, his eyes wide with fear. "We need to get out of here, now," he whispered. Ember nodded, and they both made a dash for the door. But as they reached it, Ember realized that it was stuck. The door wouldn't budge, no matter how hard they pushed. The growling noise grew louder, more intense. Ember could feel the vibrations of it through the floor, making her teeth rattle. Suddenly, the door burst open, splintering the wood. Ember and Augie stumbled backward, tripping over each other in their haste to get away. As they fell, Ember caught a glimpse of something huge and hairy, its eyes glowing yellow in the dark. The creature was massive, its body blocking out the moonlight. Ember's scream was drowned out by the sound of the creature's roar. It was a deafening sound, one that shook the very foundations of the cabin. As the creature charged toward them, Ember felt a strange sensation wash over her. It was as if she was being pulled apart and put back together again, her molecules rearranging themselves in a way that felt both exhilarating and terrifying. And then, everything went black. Ember's world went dark, and she felt herself being pulled through a vortex of colors and sounds. She tried to cry out, but her voice was lost in the void. When she came to, Ember found herself lying on the forest floor, her head throbbing with pain. "One minute we were running from that...that thing, and the next...I don't know, it was like you just disappeared." Ember's eyes scanned the surrounding forest, but there was no sign of the creature. The trees seemed to loom over her, their branches creaking ominously in the wind. "We need to get out of here," Augie said, his voice firm. "Now." Ember nodded, still trying to process what had just happened. As they made their way back through the forest, she couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. And then, she saw it. A pair of eyes, glowing yellow in the dark. Ember's heart skipped a beat. "Augie," she whispered, her voice trembling. "It's back." Augie's eyes locked onto hers, and for a moment, they just stared at each other in terror. And then, they ran. As they ran, their eyes kept pace with them, always lurking just out of reach. Ember could feel the creature's hot breath on her neck, making her skin crawl. Augie suddenly veered off the path, pulling Ember behind him. They crashed through the underbrush, the sound of their own ragged breathing and pounding hearts filling their ears. Ember's legs ached, her lungs burning from the exertion. She stumbled, her foot catching on a hidden root. Augie caught her, holding her upright as they kept running. Just when Ember thought she couldn't go any further, Augie yanked her through a narrow opening between two massive trees. They emerged into a small clearing, the moon shining down on them like a silver spotlight. Ember collapsed onto the grass, her chest heaving. Augie stood over her, his eyes scanning the surrounding trees. "We lost it," he whispered, his voice barely audible. "We're safe." Ember nodded, still trying to catch her breath. But as she looked up at Augie, she saw something that made her blood run cold. Augie's eyes had changed. They were no longer the warm, brown eyes she had known since childhood. Instead, they had turned a piercing yellow, the same color as the eyes that had been stalking them through the forest. Ember's scream was frozen in her throat. She was paralyzed with fear, unable to move or speak. And then, everything went black. Ember's world went dark, and she felt herself being pulled into a vortex of confusion and fear. When she came to, she was lying on the grass, her head throbbing with pain. Augie was kneeling beside her, his eyes back to their normal brown color. "Ember, I'm so sorry," Augie whispered, his voice shaking. "I don't know what happened. I felt...different, for a second. Like something took over my body." Ember's mind was reeling. She didn't know what to make of Augie's transformation. Was he infected with some kind of supernatural curse? Or was he somehow involved in the strange occurrences in Raven's Peak? As Ember struggled to sit up, Augie helped her to her feet. "We need to get out of here," he said, his voice firm. "Now." Ember nodded, still trying to process what had just happened. As they made their way back through the forest, she couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. And this time, she wasn't sure if it was just her imagination. As they emerged from the forest, Ember saw a figure waiting for them by the car. It was a tall, brooding man with piercing blue eyes. He was leaning against the car, his arms crossed over his chest. "Who are you?" Ember asked, her voice wary. "My name is Liam," the man replied, his voice low and smooth. "And you, Ember Wynter, are in grave danger." Liam's words sent a shiver down Ember's spine. "What do you mean?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady. Liam's eyes locked onto hers, his gaze intense. "You're being hunted, Ember," he said. "By something that doesn't want you to uncover the truth about your mother's disappearance." Ember's mind was reeling. She had so many questions, but before she could ask any of them, Liam continued. "I can help you, Ember," he said. "I can keep you safe. But you have to trust me." Ember hesitated, unsure of what to do. She didn't know Liam, and yet...there was something about him that made her feel like she could trust him. As she looked into his eyes, Ember felt a spark of connection. It was like she had known him her whole life. "Okay," she said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'll trust you." Liam's face relaxed, a small smile playing on his lips. "Good," he said. "Because we're running out of time." As Liam turned to lead them away from the forest, Ember caught a glimpse of something moving in the trees. It was a pair of eyes, glowing yellow in the dark. Ember's heart skipped a beat. She knew that she was in grave danger, and that Liam was her only hope for survival. But as she followed Liam away from the forest, Ember couldn't shake the feeling that she was walking into a whole new world of trouble. And that was just the beginning.
