Chapter 4

1589 Words
Lena's POV The town feels quieter today, the soft breeze tugging at the loose strands of my hair as I step into the little café near the edge of the beach. The smell of freshly brewed coffee fills the air, mingling with the salt of the ocean in a way that feels comforting, like a hug from the universe itself. I’ve been here a few times now, and the barista, an older woman with silver curls and a warm smile, greets me by name. “Lena, dear, the usual?” she asks, wiping her hands on her apron. I nod, smiling back. “Yes, thank you.” I’ve come to love the simple routine of my mornings here, sipping my coffee and watching the world slowly wake up. The small, tight-knit community of this coastal town has embraced me more than I ever imagined, and though I’ve only been here a few weeks, it already feels like home. I settle into my usual spot by the window, my mind already turning to the upcoming wedding I’m helping plan. It’s for a couple named Sarah and Jack—local farmers who’ve been together for years. Their wedding is going to be intimate, held at the little chapel by the sea, with a reception in a nearby barn. The simplicity of it excites me. There’s something so raw and beautiful about the way they’ve chosen to celebrate their love. It’s nothing like the lavish affairs I used to orchestrate back in the city, but I find myself enjoying the personal touch these local events have. It’s real, it’s heartfelt, and it’s something I can pour my heart into. I pull my phone from my purse to check the time when I notice a new message from Melissa. A grin tugs at the corners of my lips before I even read it. “I’m coming over for lunch! We need to catch up, and I’m bringing something for you to try. Get ready for some life-changing advice. You’re going to love it.” I shake my head, chuckling softly. Melissa has always been a force of nature, the type of person who speaks her mind without hesitation, even when it’s inconvenient for you. But she’s also my best friend, my confidante, and the one person who’s been my anchor through everything. Even when things with Alex were falling apart, she was the one who reminded me of my worth. She was there when I needed someone to listen, and I’ve come to realize that having her in my life is one of the greatest gifts I could ask for. I take a deep breath and look out the window, my eyes tracing the waves as they crash against the rocks. It’s hard to believe how much has changed in such a short time. Just a few months ago, I was living in a world that felt suffocating, caught in the cycle of trying to make a marriage work with a man who had stopped seeing me. And now, here I am, standing on the edge of something new, something I can’t yet fully comprehend, but something that feels right. I’m building a new life, a new future, and this time, it’s mine to shape. I pull myself from my thoughts as the door to the café opens with a soft chime, and in walks Melissa. She’s wearing her usual vibrant floral dress, her brown hair falling in soft waves around her shoulders. She spots me immediately and waves, making her way over to my table. “I hope you’ve saved room for lunch because I’ve got a surprise for you,” she says, setting down a large canvas bag on the table. I raise an eyebrow. “You’re going to make me eat something strange again, aren’t you?” She grins mischievously. “You’ll love it, I promise. It’s life-changing.” I laugh, shaking my head, as she pulls out a small container of something that looks like a grain salad. “I thought we were supposed to be doing a whole ‘treat yourself’ thing. What’s this?” “It’s quinoa,” she says, as if that explains everything. “Super healthy, packed with protein. And I added some roasted vegetables and a little homemade dressing. Trust me, it’s better than it sounds.” I take a cautious bite, and surprisingly, it’s delicious. The flavors are fresh, vibrant, and comforting all at once. “Okay, I’ll admit it. This is actually good,” I say, nodding approvingly. “What’s your secret?” “I have many secrets,” she says with a wink. “But that’s not why I’m here.” I raise an eyebrow, already knowing where this conversation is going. “What’s on your mind, Melissa?” She leans in, her eyes serious for the first time today. “You’ve been through a lot, Lena. And I know you’re still trying to figure things out. But I need you to hear me when I say this: You can’t keep looking back. You’re building something incredible here, and it’s time you fully embraced it. You’re not the same person you were when you left the city, and I’m proud of you for that.” I feel the lump in my throat at her words, and I swallow, trying to push down the emotions that have been building in me for days. “I don’t know if I can do this, Melissa. I don’t know if I’m strong enough to be on my own. I’m carrying a baby, and I’m scared. I feel so alone sometimes.” She takes my hand, her grip firm and reassuring. “You’re not alone, Lena. You’ve got me, and you’ve got yourself. And that’s more than enough. You’ve already proven that you can be independent. This is your time now. You’re creating a life for yourself, for your baby. And you’re doing it with strength, with dignity, and with grace.” Her words hit me like a wave, crashing over me with the force of everything I’ve been trying to deny. I blink back tears, grateful for her unwavering belief in me. “I’m trying,” I whisper, my voice barely audible. “I know you are,” she says, her smile softening. “And that’s all you need to do. You don’t have to have everything figured out right now. Just take it one step at a time.” “I’m scared of failing,” I admit, the words slipping out before I can stop them. “What if I mess this up? What if I can’t do it on my own?” “You won’t mess it up,” Melissa says firmly. “You’ve already come so far. You’re doing something most people can’t do—you’re starting over. And that takes guts, Lena. Don’t underestimate your strength.” I look at her, a small smile tugging at the corner of my lips. “Thank you, Mel. I don’t know what I’d do without you.” “You won’t ever have to find out,” she says with a wink. “Now, enough about that. Let’s talk about this wedding. How’s it going? Is everything coming together?” I nod, grateful for the change of subject. “It’s going really well. The venue is perfect, and the couple is so in love. It’s a simple wedding, but there’s something beautiful about it. It’s like...everything I’ve wanted in my own life. Real, raw, and genuine.” She leans back in her chair, clearly impressed. “That sounds amazing. I can’t wait to see it all come together. And who knows? Maybe you’ll end up with a wedding of your own one day, huh?” The thought of that makes my heart skip a beat, and I quickly push it aside. “Maybe,” I say softly, not ready to entertain that idea just yet. “But for now, I’m just focusing on getting through today.” The conversation turns to other matters, and for a while, I let myself forget about the past, about Alex and everything he’s done. I focus on the present, on the work I’m doing, on the life I’m building here. But as we finish lunch, and Melissa hugs me goodbye, her words linger in my mind. “You’ve got this, Lena. Just keep moving forward.” --- That night, after I finish my work for the day, I receive a message from Alex. It’s one of the many texts he’s sent me over the past week, each one filled with apologies, promises of change, and pleas for me to come back. I’ve ignored all of them so far, but tonight’s message feels different. “Lena, I’m sorry for everything. I know I’ve hurt you, and I hate myself for it. Please give me a chance to make things right. I’ll do whatever it takes.” I stare at the screen, my heart thudding in my chest. Part of me wants to respond, to hear his voice, to give him another chance. But then I remember everything he’s put me through—the lies, the betrayal, the endless excuses. And I know, deep down, that I can’t go back to that life. Not for him, and not for me. I delete the message without replying and set my phone down. I’m moving on, not just from Alex, but from the life I thought I wanted with him. I have a new life now, and it’s one I’m building for myself.
