Chapter 7

-THEIA- "Rough day?" my friend Daniela asked as she entered the break room. I glanced up at her from my spot at the table. "You could say that. I rescued a man from a car crash, nearly lost him, and now my boyfriend is upset because I'm missing Valentine's Day." And let's not even mention the strange glow coming from my hand as I healed my patient. After that close call, the last thing on my mind was a celebration dinner. I wanted to stay at the hospital after my shift to ensure the alpha was truly okay. Naturally, Ethan was livid when I told him my plans over the phone. To make things worse, I'll be staying here overnight, and since he took the day off to spend time with me, we won't be meeting today. I know, I'm the worst girlfriend ever. But I couldn’t just walk away and forget about the patient I almost lost. Well, I have more than one patient, but just the alpha had a life-threatening situation. "You mean your fiancée?" Daniela quirked a brow. "Shhh. Keep your voice down, please. The last thing I want is for this to spread through the grapevine. If this gets to my supervisor, I'm finished, " I said to her. "How about you? Any kids with Lego pieces stuck in their noses?" Daniela is a pediatrician and practically my only friend at the hospital. She lives alone here, but unlike me, she has a family. They just live in Italy, and he barely sees them. Maybe that's why we bonded so quickly. We both feel lonely but put a facade to the world that it doesn’t affect us. The truth is that I have no idea if my uncle and his family survived the attack on our pack. I like to think that they did, and someday, I'll meet them again. It's a nice dream. Too bad that dreams often shatter when faced with reality. Daniela pulled the chair next to me and dropped into it before starting to talk, pulling me out of my thoughts. "Just a kid with his head stuck in a chair and a few viruses. Nothing serious. I heard the car exploded. How did you avoid getting injured?" I took a sip of my coffee and thought about how the alpha had shielded me from the impact with his own body. Why would he do such a thing? He was weak and about to pass out but chose to protect the life of a stranger. My curiosity about the mysterious man grew so intense that I felt an urgent need to return to the ER immediately. "I have to go now. Can we catch up later for lunch?" "Sure, I wouldn't miss the rubbery cafeteria pizza for anything," she said as I hurried out of the room. Upon arriving back at the ER, I observed that the other two occupants of the car were nearly healed. They still appeared a bit weak, likely due to some silver pieces having scratched them as well, but they were on the road to a speedy recovery. My other patients were also okay. Today would be a quiet one if no surprises arised. When I finally reached the alpha's room, he was still unconscious. The good news was that his vitals were improving rapidly. "Could you help me turn him to his side? I need to check his back," I asked Melanie, one of the nurses, who promptly assisted in moving his strong body. "The paramedics told me they had found him on top of you, doctor," Her sly grin didn't sit well with me. Running my gloved hands along his back, I noticed the gradual healing. . Melanie was a skilled nurse, but she chatted more than I liked. "Yes, we fell due to the explosion," I replied flatly, concentrating on my task. "I wish it was me. The man is so yummy! Look at his tats." "It was an explosion, Melanie! Not a date! Let's roll him over. We need to change his bandage." Her flirty tone was getting on my nerves. "Just look at those corded forearms, doctor. And his big hands! The things these hands can do..." That did it! Unreasonable anger flared up in my veins, and I wanted her away from him right away. "Melanie! This is completely inappropriate. He is a patient, and I won't stand for such disrespect. Please leave, I can continue on my own." Startled by my irritated tone, she said nothing more and left the room. I proceeded to examine the surgical wound. It was healing nicely, but the bandage was wet and needed to be changed. With his quick healing, he'd be on the mend in no time. With everything finished, I took a moment to check his face. The swelling and bruises were fading fast, making him more handsome with each passing second. I couldn't resist running my gloved thumb over his lips, the split already mended. Gazing at his sinful lips, I wished I wasn't wearing gloves, so I could feel his skin against my palm. Dear Godess! I scolded Melanie for not being professional, and now I was the one crossing the line. What does his sexy stranger do that makes people crazy? He stirred, and I made a quick motion to move my hand away from him before he woke up. But he surprised me by grabbing my wrist, holding my hand in place. "Hello doctor," his deep gravel voice surprised me, making me jolt back. His eyes flew open, their magnetic blue color enveloping me like a downpour in a storm. A tingle spread down my neck and exploded every nerve of my body. I wanted to say something, but my mouth was bone dry. After a brief pause, I offered him a timid smile and managed to collect myself. "Good Morning. I'm Doctor Pierson, a resident doctor at St. Michael Hospital. You and your friends were admitted here yesterday following a car crash. Can you share a little about yourself and what you recall?" Briefly shutting his eyes, he took a deep breath. "There was an explosion, and our car crashed. I woke up trapped and couldn't find my friends. Are they all right?" "Yes, they were luckier than you. You almost died." The corner of his mouth twitched, making my stomach flutter. "I remember you. You took me out of the car and saved me. Like an angel." The way he spoke the nickname felt like a gentle caress, making me blush. I turned my back on him to hide my face, keeping myself occupied by tossing my gloves into the trash. "What’s your name?" He paused for a bit before answering me. "I… I don’t remember." I pivoted to face him once more. "Short-term memory loss is normal after a concussion." I switched on my penlight and started to test his reflexes. "Can you follow my finger?" His fixed glare shadowed my every step, and I struggled to ignore it. From this distance, I could catch his delicious masculine scent, a combination of cedar wood and leather. The sound of the door opening behind me made me turn around, and there was Melanie at the doorway. "Excuse me, doctor. You've got a call at the reception desk." She walked over and whispered, "Your boyfriend tried to reach you but couldn't get through. He wants you to call him back." "Thank you, Melanie." I told her, and turned my body to face the Alpha again. But something changed. Power irradiated from his muscular frame. His eyes flashed an electric blue. My body stilled. My inhale grew shallow. I was staring into the same eyes that had haunted me for nine years. The cerulean blue eyes of the black wolf that killed my father.
