Chapter 4

Months had passed since the terrible encounter with Mr. HANK, and Gabby was now living a life full of misery, raising her child who had been born from that night. Gabby sat on the edge of her bed, holding her newborn daughter, Miranda, in her arms. Miranda cooed softly, her eyes wide and curious. Gabby's heart ached with a mix of love and fear. Miranda was a beautiful reminder of that night, but also a symbol of the difficult reality Gabby now faced. The morning after that night in Tony's hotel room was a blur of confusion and accusations. Both Gabby and Tony had been bewildered, their memories hazy and fragmented. The media had been relentless, tearing their lives apart. Gabby had fled the city, seeking refuge in a small town where no one knew her. Tony had disappeared from the public eye, leaving Gabby without any way to contact him. Now, Gabby felt the burden of being a single mother bearing down on her as she glanced down at Miranda. Throughout her pregnancy, she had vividly pictured this moment countless times, but the reality was far more difficult than she had imagined. It was all too much, the restless nights, the never-ending feedings, and the never-ending concern. Her phone buzzed on the nightstand, breaking the silence. She glanced at the screen and saw a message from her friend, Lily. "How are you holding up?" it read. Gabby sighed and typed back, "Barely. I feel like I’m drowning." A few moments later, Lily responded, "I’m coming over. You need a break." Gabby nodded, tears welling up in her eyes. "I just don’t know if I can do this. It’s so hard, Lily." Lily smiled gently. "You’re stronger than you think. And you’re not alone. Let me take Miranda for a while. You get some rest."ma'am Reluctantly, Gabby handed Miranda over and sank onto the couch. She closed her eyes, exhaustion washing over her. As she drifted off, her mind wandered back to the day she had discovered she was pregnant. ✿ ✿ ✿ She had been at work, feeling nauseous and lightheaded. A quick visit to the clinic confirmed her suspicions. The doctor’s words had been a blur, but the reality had hit her like a ton of bricks. She was going to be a mother, and Tony was the father. The next few months had been a whirlwind of emotions. She had felt joy and fear in equal measure, grappling with the enormity of her situation. She had tried to find Tony, but he had disappeared, his life consumed by his career and the scandal that had erupted. Gabby had faced the world alone, her belly growing rounder with each passing day. She had found a small apartment and a job that paid just enough to get by. But the loneliness had been crushing, the fear of the unknown paralyzing. When Miranda had been born, Gabby had felt a rush of love so powerful it had taken her breath away. But that love had been tempered by the harsh reality of single motherhood. The late-night feedings, the constant crying, the endless fatigue, it had all been more than she had anticipated. ✿ ✿ ✿ Gabby awoke to the sound of Miranda's cries. She rubbed her eyes and sat up, feeling more rested but still weary. The soft light of dawn filtered through the curtains, casting a warm glow in the room. Lily was in the kitchen, rocking Miranda gently. "She’s hungry," Lily said, handing the baby over with a soft smile. Gabby nodded, a tired but grateful smile on her face. She took Miranda in her arms and settled into the well-practiced routine of feeding her. As Miranda nursed, Gabby's mind began to drift to Tony. She wondered if he ever thought about her if he knew about Miranda. A part of her longed to find him, to give him a chance to be a part of their daughter’s life. But another part of her knew it was probably futile. He felt unreachable, a ghost from her past. After Miranda was fed and changed, Gabby gently rocked her to sleep and placed her in the crib. She walked back to the living room, where Lily was sipping on a cup of tea. Gabby sat down next to her, sighing deeply. Lily turned to her, her expression filled with concern and kindness. "You should try to find Tony again," she suggested gently. "He deserves to know about his daughter." Gabby ran a hand through her hair, feeling the weight of the decision. "I don't know, Lily. It's been so long. What if he doesn’t want anything to do with us?" Lily reached out and placed a reassuring hand on Gabby's shoulder. "You won't know unless you try. Maybe he’s changed. Maybe he’s been looking for you too. Don’t you think Miranda deserves a chance to know her father?" Gabby sighed again, her mind racing. "You're right. I just... I don't know where to start." Lily thought for a moment. "We can start by searching online. It might give us some clues or at least a starting point." Gabby nodded reluctantly. "Okay. But I just remember how he was the last time we met. He was so mean, so suspicious. I don't know if I can go through that again." Lily looked surprised. "What happened that day?" Gabby took a deep breath. "I woke up in his hotel room, completely disoriented. Neither of us knew how I got there, but he was furious. He thought I was trying to ruin his reputation or something. We spent the whole day trying to piece things together, but it was a nightmare. By the end of it, I just wanted to forget everything." Lily's eyes softened with sympathy. "That sounds awful. But people change, Gabby. And this isn't just about you and him anymore. It's about Miranda." Gabby nodded slowly. "You're right. Let's give it a try." They spent the next few hours searching through various social media platforms, old contacts, and even a few public records websites. The process was tedious, and the hope Gabby initially felt started to wane as they hit one dead end after another. Lily sighed, closing yet another browser tab. "Nothing. It’s like he’s disappeared." Gabby looked at the screen, frustration and disappointment etched on her face. "I guess I shouldn't be surprised. He always knew how to disappear when he wanted to." Lily put a comforting arm around her. "Don’t lose hope, Emma. We’ve only just started. Maybe we can try some of the old places he used to go." Gabby managed a small smile. "Thanks, Lily. I don't know what I'd do without you." Lily smiled back. "We’re in this together. Let’s take a break and think about our next steps. We’ll find him, Gabby. One way or another." One evening, as Gabby was leaving for work, she heard a knock on the door. She opened it to find her landlord standing there, his expression stern. "Emma, we need to talk," he said, his voice cold. "You’re two months behind on rent." Gabby's heart sank. "I’m so sorry. I’ve been trying to catch up, but with the baby and everything, it’s been tough." The landlord’s eyes softened slightly, but his tone remained firm. "I understand, but I have to run a business. You need to come up with the money, or I’ll have no choice but to evict you." Gabby nodded, tears welling up in her eyes. "I’ll figure something out. Please, just give me a little more time." The landlord sighed and nodded. "You have until the end of the month." As he left, Gabby felt a wave of panic wash over her. She was barely making ends meet as it was. How was she going to come up with the rent? That night, as she lay in bed with Miranda sleeping beside her, Gabby's mind raced with worry. She couldn’t lose their home. She had to find a way to make more money, to keep a roof over their heads. The next morning, she received an unexpected call. The voice on the other end was firm and urgent. "Gabby, we need to talk. It's about Tony." Gabby's heart skipped a beat. She clutched the phone tightly, her mind reeling. "Who is this? What do you know about Tony?" The voice hesitated, then continued. "Meet me at the old diner on Elm Street. Noon. Don’t bring anyone." The line went dead.
