CHAPTER 2

“What the hell, dude! Don’t do that”. Dylan said, stretching his phone out of the reach of Miles, his friend. “Dude, you’ve been staring at your phone screen for almost five minutes now. Are you expecting a call?”. Miles asked “No, a text”. Dylan replied, checking his phone again. “I got this girl’s number from Liz and texted her but she hasn’t replied yet”. “She pretty?”. Miles asked and Dylan raised his eyebrows at him. “I wouldn’t have got her number in the first place if she wasn’t”. He replied. “Just chill. She’s probably busy or something. Let’s go home”. Miles said to Dylan, who was seated on a table in a now empty lecture hall, and tossed Dylan’s bag to him. He slung his bag on his shoulder and was about to put his phone into his pocket when he got a notification. He checked to see it was from Isabella and his eyes grew wide with a smile on his face. “She texted back”. He said excitedly as he opened it. “Hey to you too. How’re you doing?” “Can you stop grinning like a hyena and let’s go. I’m hungry”. Miles said as he stared at Dylan, who was smiling wide as he replied to Isabella’s text. “Take a chill pill, will ya”. Dylan said and put his phone in his pocket as they left the hall. Dylan Williams is a typical bad boy fresher in college with blue eyes, long curly black hair and is six feet tall. He is nineteen years old but most of his friends are a bunch of twenty-one year olds and above. He loves partying and clubbing and is said to be every girl’s crush. He has had a thing or two with numerous girls but has never had feelings for any of them. Up until now at least. “Yo Williams”. Someone shouted from afar and Dylan and Miles turned to see a group of three guys coming their way. “Oh f*ck me”. Dylan cursed under his breath. “You still haven’t paid them back?”. Miles asked and Dylan shook his head. “Dude!” “I know, I know. I keep forgetting, but I’ll pay them back soon, I promise”. Dylan sighed “Tell that to them. If they’ll give you a chance to talk, that is”. Miles said. The boys got to them and Dylan started talking. “Look Carlos, I have the money, but it’s not on me right now. I’ll pay you tomorrow, I promise”. Dylan pleaded. “That’s what you said two days ago”. Carlos said “And the day before that”. One of the boys added. “Two weeks ago, you said your little sister’s dog was sick, so you gave her the money to get it treated, but it turns out you don’t even have a little sister”. The third guy also added. “Alright fine. I know I lied those times and I’m sorry about that, but I’m dead serious this time”. Dylan defended. “No son. I’m not falling for it this time”. Carlos stated, “You either pay back right here and now or we will teach you a lesson you’ll never forget”. “Come on, it hasn’t gotten to this”. Dylan pleaded and pinched Miles' butt. They gave each other a knowing look and almost immediately, they took off. “Hey stop right there, Dylan”. Carlos yelled as they chased them. “Would you stop if you were me?”. Dylan yelled back as he ran really fast out of the building, students walking around the school staring at them confused. “Where’s your car?”. Miles yelled, out of breath. “Right”. Dylan yelled back and they turned right. They got to Dylan’s car and quickly got in and locked the door. Carlos and the other two guys started banging on the window of the car. “Open the f*cking door right now Dylan”. The second boy warned. “Would you if you were me? No. So get outta my way?”. Dylan replied and started the car, making the engine roar to life. He reversed to get out of his parking space and drove out of school. Miles gave them the middle finger as they left. “That was so close”. He said to Dylan, panting. “I know right”. Dylan replied. “Dude, you really need to stop betting around if you don’t have any money to pay”. Miles stated. “I will, I promise”. Dylan assured him. Dylan dropped Miles off at his house and went to his own house. “I’m home”. He announced when he got home. “Welcome honey. How was your day?”. His mom, Maria asked. “T’was fine mom. Where’s dad?”. Dylan asked. “He’s not back from work yet. Go freshen up and come down for dinner”. Maria said and he nodded and went upstairs. After about thirty minutes, he came back in shorts and an oversized shirt, his hair a bit damp. “Mom, when is Karen coming home?”. He asked as he hopped on the kitchen counter, munching on a strawberry. “This weekend. She still has stuff to round up at work. Your sister is a really busy woman. I’m so proud of her”. Maria said, smiling wide. “As if”. Dylan scoffed. “How about Lowena?” “Lowena is a busy mom, Dylan. She can only come when Brittany is on a school break. I’m pretty sure Brittany is giving her a really hard time”. Maria said with a chuckle. “I miss my grand baby” “You could go visit them”. Dylan suggested. “And leave you alone in the house? Never again. That didn’t turn out so good last time”. Maria said. “Oh, come on mom. I told you, the venue for the party caught fire right before the party and we couldn’t refund everyone’s money, so I had no choice but to volunteer the house”. Dylan defended. “Without telling your father and I?”. Maria said, setting the table. “And I’ve apologized a thousand and one times”. Dylan said “Just come eat”. Maria said. “I’m home”. Dylan’s dad, Luke, announced as he entered the house. “Hi honey”. Maria said as she took his briefcase from him and he joined them for dinner. “Hey dad”. Dylan greeted, nonchalantly. “Why are you home so early? Did you skip your remaining classes for the day?”. Luke asked and Dylan rolled his eyes. “Come on, honey. Let him be”. Maria said to her husband. “Don’t I deserve to know if I’m getting my money’s worth at least?”. Luke said and Dylan abruptly slammed his fork on the table and got up. “Well, I didn’t skip any class”. He said and was leaving, but stopped and turned back. “Oh and I’ll make sure to pay you back all your money when I become the artist you don’t want me to be”. Then he stormed upstairs. “Honey, come on. Dylan loves to paint and you know this”. Maria said “Oh shut up. You always defend him, which is why he misbehaves and has the guts to walk out on me”. He yelled, angrily. “So what if he loves to paint? He could do that as a hobby, but while he’s in school, he should study to become a doctor or lawyer or something better. Why must he study Fine-Arts of all majors? Is he going to rely on his paintings to feed his family?”. Luke said, angrily. Maria didn’t say anything else so as not to get her husband any more angry. Luke can be very unreasonable and irrational at times and is very short-tempered. He even used to hit Maria some years back but stopped for some reason. Dylan and his sisters knew about it but hadn’t for once talked about it. Meanwhile, Dylan, who was in his room, had completely forgotten about what happened downstairs as he was too engrossed in his phone. Isabella had texted back already and that’s all that mattered to him at that moment. Will this mark the beginning of a change in Dylan’s life too? Or is Isabella just going to be like all the other girls he’s dated?
