Chapter 1

680 Words
The Beginning The night Amara met Adrian Vale was the night she realized some doors were never meant to be opened. Amara had spent years running from a past she refused to talk about. She believed that if she moved far enough away, changed her surroundings, and stayed quiet, the pain would finally forget her. She was wrong. The rain poured heavily as she stood outside a place she never thought she would enter. Her hands tightened around the small bag she carried, the only thing left from the life she was trying to leave behind. She didn’t know that behind those doors was a man everyone feared. A man with secrets. A man who would change everything. The moment Amara stepped inside, she immediately felt that something was different. The house was beautiful, but it didn’t feel warm. Everything was perfect — the furniture, the paintings, the silence — yet something about the place made her feel like it was hiding something. A woman approached her with a careful smile. “Are you Amara Bennett?” Amara nodded. “Yes.” The woman looked at her for a moment before stepping aside. “Mr. Vale is waiting for you.” Amara’s heartbeat changed. She had heard the name before. Everyone had. Adrian Vale. The man people described in whispers. The man who could destroy someone’s life with a single decision. But as Amara walked down the hallway toward him, she wondered one thing: Why did a man like Adrian Vale need someone like her? Amara stopped in front of the large wooden door. For a few seconds, she just stood there. A small voice inside her told her to leave. But another part of her knew she couldn’t keep running forever. She knocked. “Come in.” His voice was calm, but it carried a kind of authority that made her straighten. Amara slowly opened the door. The man standing near the window turned around. Adrian Vale. He looked exactly like the rumors said — controlled, unreadable, and impossible to understand. His eyes studied her silently. Not in a cruel way. Almost like he was trying to remember something. “You’re late,” he said. Amara frowned. “I was told to come here. I wasn’t told I had a schedule.” For the first time, something changed in his expression. A small reaction. Almost like he was surprised she answered back. Most people were afraid of him. But Amara wasn’t. And that was the first thing about her that caught his attention. Adrian looked away from her and walked back toward his desk. “You don’t seem nervous.” Amara folded her arms. “Should I be?” A quiet silence filled the room. Most people who entered this office avoided looking directly at him. They chose their words carefully. But Amara stood there like she had nothing to lose. And somehow, that interested him. “You have no idea who you’re dealing with,” Adrian said. Amara held his gaze. “Maybe I don’t. But I know one thing.” His eyes returned to hers. “What?” “I know people who need everyone to fear them usually have something they’re trying to hide.” For a moment, the room became completely still. Amara didn’t know it yet… But those words were the first crack in the wall Adrian had spent years building. Adrian’s expression changed for the first time. Not anger. Not an annoyance. Something else. Something Amara couldn’t understand. “You should be careful with your words,” he said quietly. Amara raised an eyebrow. “Why? Because the truth bothers you?” Before Adrian could answer, there was a knock on the door. A man stepped inside and looked at Adrian. “Sir, we found her.” The air in the room changed. Adrian’s eyes moved back to Amara. For the first time, the calm mask he always wore disappeared. And Amara realized something. This was not about her entering his world. She was already connected to it. She just didn’t know how.
