The Betrayal
The words followed them long after they left the forest.
The person who destroyed both families is closer than you think.
Amara couldn't stop thinking about them.
Someone they trusted.
Someone who had been there all along.
She walked quietly beside Adrian, holding the letter tightly in her hand.
"You're quiet."
Adrian's voice broke the silence.
Amara looked at him.
"So are you."
A small silence passed between them.
They had spent so long searching for answers.
But now that the truth was coming closer...
it felt more dangerous than the mystery itself.
Adrian looked ahead.
"There's something I haven't told you."
Amara stopped walking.
"What?"
He hesitated.
And that hesitation told her everything.
"Adrian..."
"I found something before I met you."
He reached into his jacket and pulled out the old photograph.
The same photograph that started everything.
But this time...
There was something different.
A small mark was carved into the corner of the picture.
Amara leaned closer.
"What is that?"
Adrian's expression became serious.
"A symbol."
A cold feeling moved through her.
"Where have you seen it before?"
Adrian looked at her.
"On the message that brought us here.”
Amara stared at the symbol.
Her mind searched through every memory she had recovered.
The rain.
The voice.
The night she couldn't remember.
But nothing came.
"Why didn't you show me this before?"
Adrian looked away.
"Because I didn't know what it meant."
"And now you do?"
A pause.
"Not exactly."
Amara sighed.
"Then why are we still chasing it?"
Adrian looked at her.
"Because my father drew that symbol before he died."
The words stopped her.
"What?"
"I found it in his old notes."
Amara looked at the photograph again.
A symbol connected to Adrian's father.
A symbol connected to the message.
A symbol connected to the night she lost her memory.
Everything was leading back to the same place.
The past.
Before she could speak, the stranger suddenly stopped walking.
Adrian noticed.
"What is it?"
The stranger looked behind them.
His face changed.
"We have a problem."
Amara's heart sank.
"What now?"
The stranger pointed toward the road ahead.
A car was waiting.
And someone was standing beside it.
Waiting for them.
Adrian immediately moved in front of Amara.
The stranger's expression became serious.
“Stay behind us”
Amara looked at the person beside the car.
Even from a distance, something about them felt familiar.
Not like the voice from her memories.
Something else.
The figure stepped forward
“Adrian’’
His body stiffened.
Because he knew the voice.
Amara noticed the change in him.
“You know them.’’
Adrian didn't answer.
The person walked closer.
And the truth became clearer.
It was someone they never expected to see.
Someone who should have been on their side.
The stranger whispered:
"This is impossible."
Amara looked between them.
"Who is it?"
Adrian's face hardened.
"My father's closest friend."
Silence.
The man stopped a few feet away from them.
His eyes moved to Amara.
"So..."
He said quietly.
"After all these years, you finally found her."
Amara felt a chill.
"Found me?"
The man's expression didn't change.
"Your mother tried to hide you."
Adrian stepped forward.
"What are you talking about?"
The man looked at him.
"You still don't understand, do you?"
A pause.
"Your father wasn't only protecting Amara."
He looked at the letter in her hand.
"He was protecting you from the truth.”
Adrian stared at him.
"What truth?"
The man looked at him with something close to pity.
"The truth about your father."
A cold silence followed.
Amara watched Adrian carefully.
She could see the anger building inside him.
For years, he had searched for answers.
For years, he had believed he knew exactly what happened.
But now everything is changing.
"What are you saying?" Adrian asked.
The man looked at the photograph in his hand.
"Your father discovered who was behind everything."
Amara's heart raced.
"Who?"
The man didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at the stranger beside them.
"You should tell them."
The stranger's face became tense.
Adrian noticed.
"You know something."
The stranger stayed silent.
And that silence was enough.
Amara took a step back.
"All this time..."
Her voice shook.
"Everyone knew more than me."
Nobody spoke.
Because she was right.
The truth had been hidden from her.
But now it is finally coming out.
The man beside the car looked at Adrian.
"Your father trusted the wrong person."
A pause.
"And that mistake cost him his life."
The wind moved through the trees.
Then the man said the words that changed everything.
"The person who betrayed your father..."
He looked at Amara.
"...is someone you both know.”
Nobody moved.
The words settled between them like a warning.
Amara looked at Adrian.
For the first time, she saw something she had never seen before.
Not anger.
Not suspicion.
Fear.
"Who?" she whispered.
The man beside the car looked at them.
"Someone who was there from the beginning."
Adrian's hands tightened.
"Stop speaking in riddles."
The man's expression remained serious.
"You want the truth?"
A pause.
"Then you need to be ready for what it will cost you."
Amara stepped forward.
"I've spent my whole life missing pieces of my own story."
Her voice became stronger.
"I can handle the truth."
The man studied her for a moment.
Then he looked at the stranger.
"Tell them."
The stranger closed his eyes.
Like he had been carrying this secret for years.
"When Adrian's father died..."
He paused.
"He wasn't alone."
Adrian looked at him.
"You already told us that."
The stranger shook his head.
"No."
His voice lowered.
"You don't understand."
A heavy silence followed.
"He wasn't alone because someone was with him."
He looked at Amara.
"He wasn't alone because someone was trying to save him."
A pause.
"He wasn't alone because someone betrayed him."
Amara felt her heartbeat quicken.
"Who?"
The stranger finally answered.
"The person who caused it all..."
He looked at Adrian.
"...was someone your father trusted like family.”
Adrian froze.
"No."
The word came out immediately.
Almost like he refused to let himself believe it.
The stranger looked at him sadly.
"I wish I was wrong."
Amara watched Adrian.
She could see the battle happening inside him.
The need to know.
And the fear of the answer.
"Who was it?" she asked.
The stranger took a deep breath.
"Your uncle."
Silence.
The world seemed to stop.
Adrian stared at him.
"My uncle?"
The stranger nodded.
"Your father's own brother."
Amara felt a chill.
"But why?"
The stranger looked down.
"Because he wanted everything your father had."
Adrian shook his head.
"No."
His voice became harder.
"My uncle loved my father."
The stranger looked at him.
"That is what made the betrayal easier."
Nobody spoke.
Because the truth hurts more when it comes from someone you trusted.
Adrian looked away.
All his life, he had searched for the person responsible.
But he never imagined the answer would be someone carrying the same family name.
Amara stepped closer.
"Adrian..."
He didn't respond.
For the first time, he looked completely lost.
Then his phone rang.
Everyone turned.
Adrian looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
A message had arrived.
One sentence.
Stop searching, or the next person you lose will be Amara.
