The Escape
The cabin became silent.
Too silent.
Amara could hear her own heartbeat.
"They're here," the stranger whispered.
Adrian looked toward the window.
"How many?"
The stranger's expression remained serious.
"Enough."
Amara looked between them.
"So what happens now?"
Adrian turned to her.
"Now we leave."
She almost laughed.
"Again?"
But the fear in his eyes stopped her.
This time was different.
They weren't just running from someone chasing them.
They were running from people who knew exactly who she was.
The stranger moved toward the back door.
"There is another way out."
Adrian followed.
But Amara didn't move.
She looked at the old envelope still sitting on the table.
The one with her name on it.
"We can't leave that."
Adrian stopped.
"Amara."
"What if that's the only answer we have?"
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Adrian walked back to the table.
He picked up the envelope.
"Fine."
His eyes met hers.
"But you stay close."
Amara nodded.
And together, they disappeared into the darkness behind the cabin.
The forest felt different now.
Before, it had been a place to hide.
Now, it felt like it was watching them.
Every sound made Amara turn.
Every shadow looked like someone waiting for them.
Adrian walked ahead, moving carefully through the trees.
The stranger followed behind them.
Amara noticed something.
They weren't walking like strangers anymore.
They were moving like people who had done this before.
Like people who had survived together.
"Adrian."
He glanced back.
"What?"
"How long have you known about me?"
He looked away.
"Not long."
"But long enough to believe I was connected to your father's death."
His silence hurt more than an answer.
Amara stopped walking.
"Then why are you helping me?"
Adrian stopped too.
For a moment, the only sound was the wind moving through the trees.
"Because I was wrong about you."
Those words surprised her.
Adrian Vale didn't admit mistakes easily.
"I spent years looking for someone to blame."
His voice lowered.
"And when I found you, I thought I finally had my answer."
He looked at her.
"But I was looking for a person to punish..."
A pause.
"When I should have been looking for the truth."
Amara didn't know what to say.
Because for the first time, she saw the person behind the anger.
Not the man who wanted revenge.
The man who had lost someone.
A sudden noise interrupted them.
The stranger raised his hand.
"Stop."
Everyone froze.
He looked toward the trees.
"We're not alone."
Amara held her breath.
The forest was completely still.
Too still.
Adrian slowly moved closer to her.
"Stay behind me."
This time, she didn't argue.
Not because she was afraid.
Because she trusted him.
The stranger looked around carefully.
"They found us."
A cold feeling moved through Amara.
"How?"
Nobody answered.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
"Adrian."
Everyone froze.
The voice was calm.
Almost familiar.
Adrian's expression changed.
He knew that voice.
"Who is that?" Amara whispered.
Adrian didn't respond.
The stranger stepped forward.
"You shouldn't have come here."
A figure slowly appeared between the trees.
A man.
Dressed in black.
His eyes moved from Adrian to Amara.
Then he smiled.
"So..."
He looked at Amara.
"After all these years, you finally found her."
Amara felt a chill.
"Found me?"
The man ignored her.
His attention remained on Adrian.
"You have no idea what you've uncovered."
Adrian stepped forward.
"Tell me."
The man laughed softly.
"Still asking the wrong questions."
He looked at Amara.
"The question is..."
A pause.
"Do you really want to remember what happened that night?”
Amara stared at the stranger.
The question should have been easy.
Of course she wanted to remember.
She had spent years wondering about the missing pieces of her life.
But now that the truth was standing in front of her...
she was afraid.
"What are you talking about?" she asked.
The man smiled slightly.
"You think forgetting was a mistake."
He took a step closer.
"But sometimes forgetting is the only way someone survives."
Adrian's voice became cold.
"Stay away from her."
The man looked at him.
"You're still protecting her."
"Someone has to."
A silence passed between them.
Amara looked at Adrian.
There was something in his voice.
Not anger.
Fear.
The man reached into his coat and pulled out a small object.
Amara froze.
Because she recognized it.
A necklace.
The same necklace she had seen in her memories.
The one her mother had given her.
"Where did you get that?" she whispered.
The man's eyes moved to hers.
"You were wearing it the night everything changed."
Amara felt a sharp pain in her head.
The rain.
The voices.
The fear.
It all came rushing back.
She grabbed Adrian's arm.
"I remember..."
Everyone went silent.
Adrian looked at her.
"What did you see?"
Amara looked at the necklace.
Then at the man standing before her.
And whispered:
"He was there.”
