We dropped the ferret with Zayn, who had been overjoyed, already playing with the new pet the moment we handed her over. We left immediately after that, not wanting to make whatever Cora was afraid of worse for her. But I didn’t need a soothsayer to tell me she needed help. Everything I saw there screamed domestic abuse. When I asked about the bruises, she said she’d fallen. The lie was too obvious — it reminded me of myself whenever I tried to hide Arthur’s evil deeds.
